Veteran playback singer Alka Yagnik, one of the most celebrated voices in South Asian cinema over the past four decades, is currently enduring a severe health challenge that has significantly affected her professional life. Once a constant presence behind the microphone, she is now unable to accept new recording assignments due to a rare and debilitating hearing condition.

In a recent interview, the acclaimed singer revealed that she continues to suffer from sensorineural hearing loss, a complex auditory disorder typically caused by damage to the inner ear or auditory nerve pathways. The condition has left her struggling to maintain her once-active recording schedule. According to medical assessments, her symptoms reportedly began following a sudden viral infection, which triggered an unexpected deterioration in her hearing ability. She has previously described a deeply distressing episode after disembarking from an aircraft in 2024, when she abruptly experienced a severe loss of hearing, marking a turning point in her health journey.

Despite her condition, Yagnik continues to receive frequent professional offers from composers and music directors. However, she has acknowledged that she is currently unable to accept them. In her own words, “offers continue to arrive, but I am unable to work.” This statement reflects both her continued relevance in the music industry and the unfortunate limitations imposed by her medical condition.

Her last recorded performance was featured in the film Amar Singh Chamkila, directed by Imtiaz Ali. The song, titled “Naram Kaalja”, was composed by renowned musician A R Rahman. Since then, she has not returned to the recording studio, marking a significant pause in a career that has produced countless chart-topping classics.

Earlier this year, she was honoured by the Government of India with the Padma Bhushan, one of the country’s highest civilian awards, in recognition of her immense contribution to Indian music. While acknowledging the honour, her response remained characteristically modest, stating that such recognition is always welcome whenever it arrives in an artist’s journey.

Yagnik has also appealed to her admirers for prayers and support during this difficult period. Additionally, she has used her experience to raise awareness about hearing health, advising against prolonged exposure to loud noise and excessive headphone use, both of which can contribute to long-term auditory damage.
