Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Lahore Qalandars have suffered a significant setback after their experienced opening batter Fakhar Zaman was handed a two-match suspension for ball tampering. The disciplinary action was imposed by the Pakistan Cricket Board following an incident during a high-profile fixture against Karachi Kings.

The controversy unfolded on 29 March at the iconic Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. During the closing stages of Karachi Kings’ innings, on-field umpires became suspicious of unusual handling of the ball by Lahore players. In particular, Fakhar Zaman, alongside fast bowlers Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf, was observed repeatedly manipulating the ball.

Following standard protocol, the umpires conducted an immediate inspection. Their findings indicated that the ball’s condition had been unlawfully altered, prompting formal proceedings under the PCB’s Code of Conduct. Fakhar Zaman was subsequently charged under Article 2.14, categorised as a Level 3 offence—one of the more serious breaches relating to unfair play.

A hearing was convened and overseen by match referee Roshan Mahanama. Although Fakhar denied any wrongdoing during the proceedings, the decision was reached based on the umpires’ reports and supporting evidence. The verdict resulted in a two-match suspension, immediately ruling him out of Lahore Qalandars’ forthcoming fixtures against Multan Sultans and Islamabad United.

In addition to the individual sanction, Lahore Qalandars were penalised five runs during the match, and the ball in question was replaced. Such penalties, though seemingly minor, can prove decisive in the tightly contested format of T20 cricket.

Ball tampering remains one of the most contentious issues in cricket, as it undermines the integrity of the game by artificially influencing swing and movement. Governing bodies worldwide have taken a firm stance on such violations in recent years, reinforcing strict penalties to deter players from breaching the laws.

Fakhar Zaman’s absence is expected to significantly impact Lahore Qalandars’ batting line-up. As a seasoned opener, he has been a consistent performer at the top of the order, often providing strong starts. His suspension places added pressure on the team’s bench strength and strategic planning in upcoming matches.
