Pandya Backs Struggling Mumbai Attack

Mumbai Indians’ disappointing Indian Premier League campaign deepened on Wednesday after their bowlers once again failed to defend a formidable total, but captain Hardik Pandya refused to isolate them for criticism, insisting that responsibility must be shared across the entire team.

The five-time champions, who have long been regarded as one of the most successful franchises in the tournament’s history, are enduring a difficult season. After eight matches, Mumbai sit ninth in the ten-team standings with only two victories, a position far removed from their usual title-contending standards.

At the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai produced an imposing 243 for 5 against Sunrisers Hyderabad, a total that would ordinarily be considered match-winning in most conditions. However, their bowling unit once again struggled to contain the opposition, as Hyderabad chased down the target comfortably, sealing a six-wicket victory with eight balls remaining.

The defeat has intensified scrutiny on Mumbai’s bowling department, particularly on star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who is widely regarded as one of the finest fast bowlers in world cricket. Yet, Bumrah endured another quiet outing, finishing wicketless while conceding 54 runs from his four overs. Across eight matches this season, he has managed just two wickets, a statistic that starkly contrasts with his usual impact.

Despite the growing criticism, Pandya remained measured in his assessment, stressing that the team’s shortcomings cannot be attributed to one department alone.

“I will not single out the bowlers. As a unit, we have not been able to execute what Mumbai Indians stand for,” Pandya said after the match. He added that the team had repeatedly found itself on the wrong side of marginal moments that define T20 cricket.

According to the skipper, Mumbai’s inconsistent season has also been shaped by missed opportunities and fluctuating momentum. “When you get chances, you need to grab them. That is when momentum shifts in your favour. If you don’t, it hurts you,” he noted, while still praising the effort of his players.

Mumbai have already used 22 players this season, the highest among all franchises, highlighting their ongoing search for the right combination.

As the season progresses, Mumbai face increasing pressure to revive their campaign before it slips beyond recovery, with both form and confidence appearing fragile at a crucial stage.
