A Dhaka-bound air-conditioned bus belonging to Icon Paribahan caught fire while in motion in Cox’s Bazar late on Friday night. The incident occurred at approximately 1:00 AM on 21 August in front of the N Alam Filling Station, situated west of the Kalghar Market in Ramu sub-district.
Between 25 and 30 passengers were travelling aboard the vehicle when smoke and flames suddenly engulfed the interior, triggering widespread panic. As smoke rapidly filled the cabin, passengers struggled for breath amid the escalating emergency. Local residents who witnessed the blaze rushed to the scene immediately, smashing the vehicle’s glass windows to evacuate the trapped passengers one by one. The timely intervention of the local community prevented what could have been a major catastrophe.
One of the passengers, Mohammad Rana, who was returning from a holiday with seven family members, recounted the ordeal. He described the suffocating conditions inside the bus as smoke spread through the aisle and noted that neither the driver nor his assistant were visible inside the vehicle once the fire broke out.
Officers from the Ramu Highway Police Station arrived at the scene shortly after receiving the emergency call. Sergeant Parvez from Ramu Highway Police stated that police units reached the spot within ten minutes of being notified, assisting with the final evacuation and securing the area.
Ramu Fire Service and Civil Defence Station Officer Md. Abdul Kader Chowdhury indicated that preliminary assessments suggest a mechanical fault or engine overheating may have ignited the fire. Fire authorities have launched a formal investigation to determine the precise cause of the blaze. Emergency services confirmed that no casualties or severe injuries were reported from the scene. Major national news outlets, including khaborwala, reported on the incident and the swift rescue effort.
