The 19th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is currently underway. In the tournament’s auction, Bangladesh pace bowler Mustafizur Rahman secured a contract with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for a record fee of 9.20 crore. However, according to the information provided, he was subsequently removed from the IPL by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) amid reported threats from what are described as ultra-Hindu groups.
Following this development, it is also stated that the Bangladesh national team did not travel to India for the T20 World Cup due to security concerns linked to the Mustafizur situation. Additionally, the Bangladesh government reportedly suspended live broadcast of the ongoing IPL season in relation to the same issue.
In a separate but related sequence of events within franchise cricket, Zimbabwe fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani—aged 29—found himself at the centre of disciplinary action after switching commitments between leagues.
Muzarabani was initially drafted as a replacement player for Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). However, after receiving an offer from Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, he withdrew from his agreement with the PSL franchise. As a consequence, the PSL has imposed a two-year ban on him.
The PSL stated that maintaining professionalism, transparency, and consistency is essential in franchise cricket. It further noted that engaging with another league while a binding contract remains active violates established standards. According to the league, such conduct undermines contractual reliability and damages the confidence of franchises, regulatory bodies, and associated stakeholders. Based on the severity of the breach, a two-year suspension was imposed.
Muzarabani has already featured in two IPL matches. In his second appearance against Sunrisers Hyderabad, he delivered a notable performance, taking 4 wickets for 41 runs.
This is not the first such disciplinary action in the PSL. South African cricketer Corbin Bosch was previously handed a one-year ban under similar circumstances.
Meanwhile, two other players—Australia’s Spencer Johnson and Sri Lanka’s Dasun Shanaka—have also withdrawn from PSL contracts in order to participate in the IPL. The PSL has not yet issued formal decisions in their cases, though similar disciplinary measures are considered possible.
| Player | Country | Event | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mustafizur Rahman | Bangladesh | IPL auction contract with KKR; later removed by BCCI | IPL participation withdrawn |
| Blessing Muzarabani | Zimbabwe | Left PSL contract after IPL offer from KKR | Two-year PSL ban |
| Corbin Bosch | South Africa | Similar prior contract breach case | One-year PSL ban |
| Spencer Johnson | Australia | Left PSL contract for IPL participation | Decision pending |
| Dasun Shanaka | Sri Lanka | Left PSL contract for IPL participation | Decision pending |
This sequence of events highlights ongoing contractual disputes and regulatory enforcement issues across franchise-based T20 leagues, particularly involving overlapping commitments between the IPL and PSL.
