A 21-year-old Bangladesh Police constable has died after an apparent suicide at the Demra Police Lines in the capital, hours after sharing a deeply emotional Facebook post in which he described the breakdown of his marriage and expressed overwhelming despair.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday at a multi-storey residential building inside the Demra Police Lines. The deceased was identified as Saidul Islam, who had joined Bangladesh Police as a constable approximately nine months ago.
According to family members, Saidul was living on the ninth floor of a 20-storey building within the police residential complex. His uncle, Md Sohag, said the young officer was found unconscious in his room after allegedly hanging himself at around 11:30 pm on Thursday. Colleagues rushed him to a nearby hospital, and when his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Doctors at the hospital later declared him dead.
About 16 hours before the incident, Saidul had uploaded a video on his Facebook account featuring old photographs with his wife. Accompanying the video was a lengthy message reflecting on the collapse of their relationship, his emotional suffering, and his sense of hopelessness.
In the post, he wrote that he had painstakingly built a life centred around his wife, only to see it “shattered within days”. Using the metaphor of a person stranded at sea who ultimately accepts death after losing hope of reaching shore, he suggested he had reached a similar state of despair.
The constable repeatedly questioned why their relationship had ended, wondering whether loving his wife or marrying her despite obstacles had been his greatest mistake. He recalled promises they had once made to each other, expressing disbelief that she had left despite saying only death could separate them.
He also claimed he had forgiven her many times and had repeatedly tried to save their marriage, writing that he had given her “not just a second, third or fourth chance, but countless opportunities”. According to his message, each attempt ultimately left him feeling that excessive trust can destroy a person’s chance of surviving emotionally.
The post continued with reflections on what marriage had meant to him. He described it as a lifelong commitment built on loyalty, trust and mutual support rather than a temporary emotional attachment. He lamented that everything he had believed in had come to an end.
Towards the end of the message, Saidul apologised to his parents, saying he could no longer endure his suffering. He asked for their forgiveness and described himself as having been completely broken by the circumstances surrounding his personal life.
The contents of the post have drawn significant attention on social media, where many users expressed sympathy while also highlighting the importance of recognising the signs of severe emotional distress and encouraging those in crisis to seek timely support from family, friends or mental health professionals.
Inspector Mohammad Faruk, in charge of the police camp at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, confirmed the death, citing the attending physician. He said the body had been placed in the hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination and that the relevant police station had been informed for further legal procedures.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed any additional findings regarding the circumstances surrounding the death. The incident is expected to be investigated in accordance with standard legal procedures, while the post-mortem examination will help determine the official cause of death.
The tragedy has also renewed discussion about the emotional pressures individuals may experience following relationship breakdowns and the importance of access to psychological support, particularly for young adults facing severe personal crises.
