An anti-narcotics operation in Narayanganj’s Fatullah area turned violent late on Saturday night when police officers came under attack from suspected drug traffickers. The incident left five police personnel injured, including a Sub-Inspector, while officers arrested three individuals, among them an alleged leading drug dealer known locally as “Fighter Monir”.
According to police, the incident occurred at approximately 11:30 pm in the Gudaraghat area of Masdair, Fatullah. Acting on confidential information, a team led by Sub-Inspector Nandan Sarkar conducted a raid on a location allegedly used for drug distribution and operated by Monir, also known as Fighter Monir.
During the operation, police detained Monir, aged 38, along with two associates identified as Naim, 28, and Masum, 24. Officers also reportedly seized 15 kilograms of cannabis from the site. The suspects were taken into custody as part of an ongoing effort to curb illegal drug trafficking in the area.
Police said that shortly after the arrests, news of the operation spread among Monir’s associates. A group of supporters and alleged accomplices then gathered and launched an attack on the police team in an apparent attempt to free the detainees. During the confrontation, attackers allegedly fired between 10 and 12 rounds at police officers and threw bricks and other objects.
In response to the escalating situation, officers reportedly discharged two rounds from a shotgun in self-defence to disperse the attackers and regain control of the scene. During the exchange, Monir sustained a gunshot wound to the leg. Authorities have not provided further details regarding the circumstances of his injury beyond confirming that he was wounded during the incident.
The attack resulted in injuries to five members of the police force. Those injured were identified as SI Nandan Sarkar, SI Monir, Assistant Sub-Inspector Kamrul Hasan, Assistant Sub-Inspector Monir Hossain, and Constable Ashik. All were subsequently taken to Narayanganj’s Khanpur Hospital, where they received medical treatment.
