Pregnant Woman Beaten To Death In Dhamrai; Husband Detained

A three-month pregnant woman has been beaten to death allegedly by her husband in front of their seven-year-old child in Dhamrai, Dhaka. Local residents apprehended the accused husband, Liton Sarkar, before handing him over to the police following the tragic incident.

The incident occurred on Sunday, 2 August, in the Gomgram area under Yadavpur Union in Dhamrai Upazila. The deceased has been identified as 27-year-old Popy Rani Sarkar.

Police officers recovered the victim’s body later that night and sent it to the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital morgue in Dhaka for a post-mortem examination.

Local residents revealed that Liton Sarkar worked as a CNG-driven auto-rickshaw driver and suffered from chronic drug addiction. Neighbours reported that he subjected his wife to frequent physical and mental abuse over an extended period.

According to relatives of the victim, a domestic dispute escalated on Sunday afternoon. During the altercation, Liton allegedly struck Popy Rani repeatedly with a wooden stick in full view of their young child. The severity of the assault left her critically injured and unconscious on the floor.

Liton, assisted by local residents, transported Popy Rani to Kalampur Holy General Hospital later in the evening. However, attending physicians declared her dead on arrival.

News of her death spread quickly, prompting locals to detain Liton as he attempted to flee. They alerted the police, who arrived shortly afterwards to take him into custody.

The victim’s father, Parimal Sarkar, stated that his daughter had faced continuous domestic abuse since her marriage. He noted that he had brought her back to his home on several occasions to protect her, but Liton would repeatedly apologize and persuade her to return.

Dhamrai Police Inspector (Investigation) Shahidul Islam confirmed that initial examination revealed multiple injury marks on the deceased’s body. He stated that the accused husband remains in police custody, adding that formal charges are being filed by the victim’s family and full legal proceedings will follow once the autopsy report is released.
