Cricket spectators in Lucknow were treated to an unusual and frustrating spectacle on Wednesday. The much-anticipated fourth T20 International between India and South Africa never even reached the toss, as dense fog forced the match to be abandoned before a single ball could be bowled. Visibility on the pitch was so severely impaired that commencing play was deemed impossible.

The Ekana Stadium had been packed with fans eager to witness another thrilling encounter, particularly with India aiming to seal the series. However, nature intervened decisively. Umpires conducted six separate inspections of the field, and on each occasion the verdict was unanimous: conditions were unsafe and unsuitable for cricket.

The timeline of inspections and key observations is summarised below:

Inspection TimeObservation & Outcome
6:30 PMFirst inspection; toss postponed
7:00 PMSecond inspection; conditions unchanged
8:00 PMThird inspection; heavy dew visible, pitch wet
8:30 PMPitch covered with heavy tarpaulin; further play impossible
9:00 PMFifth inspection; no improvement
9:30 PMSixth inspection; match officially abandoned

Even the smallest traces of moisture were evident: camera car tracks revealed the dampness on the outfield, despite the pitch having been rolled earlier. Every attempt to resume play proved futile.

This incident has raised questions about the rarity of matches being abandoned due to fog in international cricket. While uncommon, this is not the first instance. In 1998, a Test match between Pakistan and Zimbabwe in Faisalabad suffered a similar fate. The fog was so dense that players could not take the field, and umpires declared the third Test abandoned on the fourth day. That decision had sparked controversy at the time, with pundits debating whether a late resumption would have been possible, and questions arose regarding December cricket in Faisalabad.

YearVenueTeamsResult / Notable Outcome
1998Faisalabad, PakistanPakistan vs ZimbabweTest abandoned due to fog; Zimbabwe recorded their first Test series win on Pakistani soil
2025Lucknow, IndiaIndia vs South AfricaFourth T20I abandoned due to fog; South Africa lost a chance to level series after 10 years on Indian soil

Unlike Zimbabwe in 1998, South Africa left Lucknow disappointed rather than elated. The visitors trail 2–1 in the series, and the abandoned fourth T20 has cost them a rare opportunity to secure a T20 series victory in India after a decade.

In 148 years of international cricket, matches abandoned due to fog are exceedingly rare, and Lucknow has now become only the second venue in history to witness such an unusual interruption. Cricket fans left the stadium with a sense of frustration, reminded that even in the modern era, the sport remains at the mercy of nature.
