With just a few days to go, cricket fans across Bangladesh were eagerly anticipating the 12th edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). Traditionally, the BPL’s opening ceremony has been a glittering spectacle, featuring star-studded performances, team presentations, and fanfare that heralds the start of the tournament. This year, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had planned a similarly grandiose event to mark the beginning of the season.
However, supporters were dealt a blow as the BCB announced, via an official press release, that the opening ceremony for BPL 12 has been cancelled. The decision comes in light of the country’s current circumstances, with the safety and security of players, officials, and fans being the highest priority.
“The BPL Governing Council has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a competitive and engaging 12th edition of the Bangladesh Premier League, scheduled to begin on 26 December 2025 in Sylhet. Preparations are underway to ensure a safe and orderly environment for players, match officials, spectators, and all stakeholders. The overall readiness of participating teams and personnel is also being closely monitored.”
“In accordance with current government directives regarding public gatherings, and to ensure maximum safety, the BPL Governing Council has decided that no large-scale events or opening ceremonies will take place this year.”
“We may not hold the opening ceremony. Given the country’s overall situation and safety concerns, our primary focus is on ensuring that the cricket matches are conducted smoothly. At this moment, cricket itself is our utmost priority.”
Despite the absence of a formal opening, BPL 12 promises to deliver a thrilling and competitive tournament. Fans can still expect high-quality cricket action as domestic and international players vie for glory on the field. The league will continue to captivate audiences with its intense matches, individual performances, and team rivalries.
