Brazilian superstar Neymar appears increasingly likely to extend his stay with boyhood club Santos, as multiple sports media outlets report significant progress in negotiations over a new contract. Should the agreement be finalised as expected, the 33-year-old forward is poised to remain in familiar surroundings at least until the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Neymar made an emotional return to Santos in January this year after leaving Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal, where his time was largely disrupted by persistent injuries. The move back to Brazil was widely seen as a strategic decision rather than a sentimental one—offering him the opportunity to regain match sharpness, rebuild confidence and manage his physical condition away from the intense spotlight of European football.
Despite returning to regular action and making a clear impact on the pitch, uncertainty surrounded Neymar’s future as his current contract was due to expire at the end of this month. That uncertainty, however, now appears to be easing. According to ESPN, discussions between Neymar and Santos have reached an “advanced stage”, with both parties confident of agreeing to a short-term extension, reportedly lasting six months.
During this period, Neymar attracted interest from several clubs abroad. Among the more eye-catching rumours was a potential move to Inter Miami, where he would have reunited with long-time teammate Lionel Messi. Nevertheless, Neymar is understood to have turned down all external approaches, choosing continuity over novelty. His contribution last season proved decisive in helping Santos retain their place in Brazil’s top flight, reinforcing his value both on and off the pitch.

Concerns remain, however, regarding his physical condition. Neymar has been struggling with knee issues and played through discomfort towards the latter stages of the season. Medical assessments suggest that he will soon undergo knee surgery, sidelining him for approximately one month. With the domestic season now concluded and the next campaign scheduled to begin in late January, the recovery period is viewed as manageable.
While currently enjoying a brief holiday, Neymar’s long-term focus is firmly set on international football. He has not featured for Brazil in nearly two years, yet he has spoken candidly about his desire to return to the Seleção and compete at the 2026 World Cup. Upon rejoining Santos, he remarked that winning the World Cup remains an “unfinished mission” and potentially his final chance to achieve football’s ultimate honour.
