Popular South African DJ Fatally Shot in Johannesburg Attack

Published: 18 Dec 2025, 05:10 am

A wave of shock and grief swept across South Africa on Tuesday as popular radio DJ and media personality Warwick Stock, widely known as DJ Waras, was fatally shot in Johannesburg. The 40-year-old, who was also a television presenter, podcaster, and involved in private security and property management, fell victim to an apparent targeted attack in the city centre, sparking national outrage.

According to police reports, three suspects approached Stock near the Zambezi House outside Carlton Centre, one of Johannesburg’s busiest districts. CCTV footage later revealed that one of the assailants, dressed in a security guard uniform, opened fire before the trio fled on foot. Despite his efforts to escape, Stock collapsed a short distance from the scene.

“The suspects approached Mr Stock after he had parked his vehicle and shot him before fleeing the scene on foot,” confirmed South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Fred Kekana. Authorities have yet to determine the motive behind the attack, and no arrests have been made so far. Crucially, police recovered spent cartridges and other important evidence from the scene. Stock was reportedly armed at the time, although nothing was taken during the incident.

Stock’s family, friends, and colleagues expressed their devastation at the sudden loss. Speaking to the national broadcaster ABC, his sister Nicole Stock said, “We cannot accept this death.” She also urged the public to refrain from sharing graphic images or videos of the incident online, citing consideration for Stock’s three children.

DJ Waras had carved out a high-profile career in South African media. Beyond his radio and television work, he was active in private security, VIP protection, and property management. His death prompted condolences from political leaders, ministers, and figures in the entertainment industry. South Africa’s Minister of Arts and Culture, Gauten Makenzie, described him as “someone who spoke the truth fearlessly.”

Police have appealed to witnesses to come forward with any information. “The suspects walked a considerable distance after the shooting, and investigations are ongoing to trace their whereabouts,” stated Chief Kekana. Authorities are pursuing leads in an effort to bring those responsible to justice and to prevent further violence in the area.
