Kylian Mbappé is on the brink of rewriting a piece of Real Madrid history. The French superstar finds himself in a rare position to challenge Cristiano Ronaldo’s long-standing record of most goals in a single calendar year for the club — 59 strikes, set back in 2013. With just a week remaining in the calendar year, the stakes are high and the margin for error minimal.
Ronaldo’s record has stood for over a decade as a benchmark of excellence. This year, Mbappé has come tantalisingly close, netting 56 goals across all competitions in 2025. To surpass the Portuguese legend, he needs just four more goals — a challenging yet achievable target given his current form.
Since joining Real Madrid before the 2024–25 season, the 26-year-old forward has become the team’s central attacking threat. In the ongoing season alone, he has scored 26 goals, having already bagged 30 in the first half of the calendar year. The cumulative tally brings him within striking distance of Ronaldo’s record, making history a heartbeat away.
However, opportunities are extremely limited. Real Madrid have just two fixtures remaining before the end of the year: a Copa del Rey tie against third-division side Talavera on 17 December, and a La Liga clash with Sevilla on 20 December.
The Talavera match is likely to see Mbappé rested, particularly as he has recently returned from injury, reducing his chances of padding his goal tally. That leaves the La Liga encounter against Sevilla as the only realistic opportunity for him to chase history. Scoring four goals in a single top-flight match is no easy feat, yet for a player of Mbappé’s calibre, it is far from impossible.
If he manages even a brace, he will close the gap and keep fans and pundits eagerly speculating until the final whistle of 2025. The coming days may well define Mbappé’s place alongside the club’s legends, as he attempts to etch his name in the record books in the same breath as Ronaldo.
| Player | Year | Goals Scored | Matches Played | Notes |
| Cristiano Ronaldo | 2013 | 59 | All competitions | Record for most goals in a calendar year for Real Madrid |
| Kylian Mbappé | 2025 | 56 | All competitions | Needs 4 more to surpass Ronaldo; limited matches remaining |
With the clock ticking and history within reach, all eyes will be on Mbappé as he attempts to carve his own legendary status at Real Madrid.
