A criminal case has been filed with the police following a violent attack on three supporters of Abdul Hannan Masud, Senior Joint Chief Coordinator of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and the party’s candidate for the Noakhali-6 (Hatiya) constituency. The incident, which left the victims seriously injured, has sent shockwaves through the local political landscape and triggered widespread concern, anger and unease among residents of the area.

The matter was confirmed on Friday morning, 19 December, by the Officer-in-Charge of Hatiya Police Station, Md Saiful Alam. Speaking to the media, he said that the case names eight individuals as accused, while a further four to five unidentified persons have also been included in the complaint. Police have already visited the scene of the incident and launched a formal investigation to determine the full circumstances behind the attack. Several teams have been deployed to identify and arrest those responsible, he added.

According to police sources, the case was filed on Thursday afternoon by one of the injured victims, Md Hasan Uddin, who sustained serious wounds during the assault. In his written complaint, Hasan Uddin stated that he and his companions were travelling by motorcycle when they were deliberately stopped by a group of assailants. Armed with sticks, iron rods, machetes and other locally made weapons, the attackers allegedly launched a sudden and brutal assault with the intention of killing them.

The complaint further claims that Hasan Uddin suffered the most severe injuries, sustaining deep cuts from sharp weapons on several parts of his body. During the attack, the assailants are also accused of looting cash amounting to 137,200 taka from him. In total, the incident is said to have caused financial losses worth 187,200 taka, including stolen money and other damages.

Speaking from his hospital bed, Hasan Uddin alleged that the attack was politically motivated. He claimed that he and the other victims were targeted because they had been speaking out in support of landless and marginalised people in the area. According to him, their continued involvement in political organising and campaign activities in favour of Abdul Hannan Masud had angered a vested interest group, which ultimately led to the planned and violent assault.

Officer-in-Charge Md Saiful Alam described the incident as a serious criminal offence and said it was being investigated with utmost গুরুত্ব. Initial findings suggest that the attack may have been premeditated and linked to political rivalry. He assured that the police would take all necessary legal measures to ensure that those involved are brought to justice and that no one would be spared.

The attack took place on Tuesday evening at around 6:30 pm in the Killar Bazar area of Madhyam Shullukia village, under Ward No. 5 of Charking Union in Hatiya upazila. The injured individuals were identified as Md Hasan Uddin, son of Md Omar Faruk; Emdad Hossain, son of Md Salauddin; and Rajib Uddin, son of Emran Hossain. All three are known to be politically active and had been openly campaigning in support of Abdul Hannan Masud.

Local residents have expressed deep concern over the incident, warning that such acts of violence are creating fear among ordinary people. Many have called for the swift arrest and exemplary punishment of the attackers to prevent similar incidents in the future and to restore peace and stability in the area.
