A chilling mystery has emerged along the Bangladesh–India border after police recovered the body of an unidentified man from a lake located near the frontier in Jessore’s Chougachha upazila. The discovery has sparked widespread speculation, concern, and intense curiosity among local residents, particularly due to the unusual circumstances surrounding the death.
The body was found early on Friday morning, 19 December, floating in the Gadadharpur baor, a large oxbow lake situated adjacent to the Mashila border area. According to police sources, local villagers first noticed the body drifting in the water and immediately alerted the authorities. Officers from Chougachha Police Station swiftly arrived at the scene and retrieved the corpse.
Preliminary observations suggest that the deceased was approximately 35 years old. Although his identity remains unknown, police confirmed that several personal belongings were found with him, including a gold chain and a mobile phone. The presence of these valuables has raised questions, as there were no signs of robbery or struggle on the body.
Speaking to the media, Officer-in-Charge Rezaul Karim stated that there were no visible injury marks on the deceased’s body. However, one particularly strange detail caught the attention of investigators: a mobile phone was reportedly tied to the man’s head using an orna, a traditional scarf commonly worn in South Asia. This unusual detail has prompted further investigation into the circumstances leading up to his death.
Geographically, the baor itself adds another layer of complexity to the case. Roughly half of the lake lies within Bangladeshi territory, while the remaining portion extends into India. Police believe the man may have been attempting to cross the border through the water route, a method sometimes used to avoid detection.
“With no injury marks found, our initial assumption is that he may have died due to extreme cold exposure,” said the officer-in-charge. December temperatures in the region can drop significantly at night, making prolonged exposure to cold water particularly dangerous. “However, this is only a preliminary assessment,” he added.
The body has been sent to the morgue for a post-mortem examination, which is expected to provide crucial insights into the actual cause of death. Until the autopsy report is available, police are refraining from drawing any definitive conclusions.
Local residents have expressed shock and unease following the discovery. Many gathered near the lake throughout the morning, whispering theories and expressing concern over border security and safety in the area. Some villagers claim this is not the first time a body has been found in the baor, although police have not confirmed any previous incidents.
Authorities are now working to identify the deceased by examining the mobile phone and checking missing persons reports from nearby districts. If necessary, they may also coordinate with Indian border officials to determine whether the man was known on the other side of the frontier.
As investigations continue, the mysterious death serves as a sobering reminder of the risks associated with illegal border crossings and the harsh realities faced by those who attempt them. For now, the border lake remains calm on the surface, but beneath it lies a story that authorities are racing to uncover.
