Khulna city has once again been shaken by a shocking act of targeted violence, as a journalist was brutally shot dead by armed assailants who arrived on motorcycles. The victim, Imdadul Haque Milon, aged 45, was a working journalist and a well-known figure in the local media community. The deadly attack also left Debashish Biswas, a 30-year-old veterinary practitioner, critically injured. The incident took place at around 9:30 pm on Thursday, 18 December, in the Sholua Bazar area under Aranghata Police Station, sending waves of fear through the neighbourhood and sparking outrage among journalists and civil society alike.
According to eyewitnesses and local residents, Milon was sitting at a roadside tea stall with Debashish Biswas and several acquaintances, engaged in casual conversation, when two motorcycles carrying four armed men suddenly arrived at the scene. Without issuing any warning or engaging in any exchange, the attackers opened fire indiscriminately. Debashish Biswas was struck first, sustaining a gunshot wound to the chest and collapsing instantly. Moments later, the assailants turned their weapons towards journalist Imdadul Haque Milon, shooting him in the head at close range. He died on the spot, before anyone could come to his aid. The entire attack unfolded within moments, after which the gunmen fled the area at speed.
Local people quickly gathered and, displaying remarkable presence of mind, rushed both victims to Khulna Medical College Hospital. Hospital authorities later confirmed that Imdadul Haque Milon was declared dead upon arrival in the emergency department. Debashish Biswas was admitted to the surgery unit, where doctors described his condition as critical but stable, and said he was receiving intensive medical care.
Khulna Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (North), Sudarshan Kumar Roy, confirmed the incident and stated that law enforcement agencies responded immediately. Multiple investigation teams have been formed to identify the perpetrators and uncover the motive behind the killing. Police are collecting forensic evidence from the scene and analysing nearby CCTV footage in an effort to track the attackers. Officials have expressed hope that the mystery surrounding the murder will be resolved swiftly.
Imdadul Haque Milon was associated with the online news portal Bartaman Somoy and also served as President of the Sholua Press Club. Previously, he worked for the local daily newspaper Dainik Probaho. Known for his integrity, courage, and social engagement, Milon was regarded as a committed journalist who maintained close ties with the local community.
Speaking emotionally, Milon’s uncle, Md Jamal Sharif, said he rushed to the scene after hearing the news and found Milon lying in a pool of blood. Despite immediate efforts to save him, doctors could do nothing. He added that, to their knowledge, Milon had no personal enemies and was also serving as General Secretary of the Sholua Bazar Committee.
Meanwhile, the brother of the injured Debashish Biswas stated that Debashish was primarily involved in business and veterinary work, and the family remains uncertain as to why he was targeted.
Officer-in-Charge of Aranghata Police Station, Shahjahan Ahmed, said the killing appeared to be a premeditated attack. Police are working relentlessly to arrest those responsible. The incident has once again raised serious concerns about law and order in Khulna, with residents demanding the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the perpetrators.
