Protesters Block Dhaka–Mymensingh Highway Over Hadi’s Death

Published: 19 Dec 2025, 06:26 am

In a dramatic demonstration of public anger, leaders and activists of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP) blocked the Dhaka–Mymensingh Highway in Tongi, Gazipur, on Wednesday night to protest the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of the Inquilab Manch. The blockade, which lasted approximately one hour, caused significant traffic congestion along the busy arterial route.

Eyewitnesses reported that the obstruction began around 11:20 pm near College Gate, Safi Uddin Road, and continued until 12:20 am. During this period, vehicles on both sides of the highway were brought to a standstill, leaving commuters stranded in long queues.

Protesters carried placards and chanted slogans demanding a prompt and impartial investigation into Hadi’s death. They called for the swift arrest of those responsible and exemplary punishment to deter future attacks. “If justice is not served, we will escalate our protests and take even stricter measures,” one demonstrator told reporters.

Police arrived on the scene shortly after being notified and negotiated with the protesters to ensure the situation did not escalate further. By 12:20 am, the blockade was lifted, and traffic gradually returned to normal.

The unrest in Tongi mirrors widespread public anger across Gazipur, where students and ordinary citizens have expressed deep concern over the circumstances surrounding Hadi’s death. Many have urged authorities to act decisively to restore public confidence and prevent similar incidents in the future.

Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent political figure, was fatally shot in Dhaka earlier this month and passed away while receiving treatment at Singapore General Hospital. His death has sparked protests in multiple districts, highlighting growing frustrations among supporters over perceived delays in justice.

Law enforcement authorities have stressed their commitment to maintaining public order while ensuring that citizens can exercise their right to protest peacefully. At the same time, local leaders have called on the government to investigate the attack thoroughly and transparently.
