Piyush Chawla once again showcased why he is one of the most formidable spinners in T20 cricket, claiming four crucial wickets to steer Abu Dhabi Knight Riders (ADKR) to a convincing four-wicket victory over Gulf Giants at the Abu Dhabi International Stadium. This win marked ADKR’s second successive triumph in the ILT20 and their third overall, signalling that the team is firmly hitting top form this season.
The Giants, put in to bat, were bolstered by an electrifying innings from Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who smashed 72 runs off just 45 deliveries. His explosive strokeplay included a flurry of boundaries and a towering six that marked his 6,000th T20 run, a milestone celebrated by cricket fans worldwide. Gurbaz looked in complete control, punishing Jason Holder and Olly Stone in the early overs, while Pathum Nissanka offered brief fireworks before falling to Stone’s pace. Captain James Vince was elegant in his approach, executing a classic cover-drive and a backfoot punch that reminded fans of his technical prowess.
However, Chawla’s introduction in the seventh over changed the complexion of the match. The leg-spinner immediately struck gold, removing Vince with his first delivery. Sunil Narine quietly supported in the other end, maintaining pressure. Chawla then outfoxed Moeen Ali with a perfectly disguised googly and picked up Azmatullah Omarzai and Matthew Forde in consecutive balls. This flurry of wickets left the Giants struggling at 135 for six after 16 overs, and a late surge proved insufficient, leaving them at 165 for seven at the end of their innings.
In reply, ADKR’s opening pair of Phil Salt and Alex Hales began with an aggressive flourish. Salt unleashed boundaries off the very first two balls of the innings, while Hales steadily built momentum. The duo’s scintillating performance helped ADKR reach 53 without loss at the end of the PowerPlay. However, the Giants struck back with Tabraiz Shamsi claiming the key wicket of Salt, followed swiftly by Liam Livingstone’s dismissal, injecting tension into the chase.
Despite the setbacks, Hales continued to find the boundary regularly, while Sherfane Rutherford added crucial impetus with a 16-run 14th over featuring 4, 6, and 6. But ADKR suffered a mini-collapse, losing three wickets in as many overs and finding themselves at 138 for five after 17 overs, eerily mirroring the Giants’ own struggles. It took Andre Russell’s explosive hitting, including two massive sixes in the final over, to completely extinguish any doubt and secure the win with 19 balls to spare.
Chawla finished with figures of 4 for 27, earning the Player of the Match award, while the Giants’ top order could not capitalise on a promising start. With this win, ADKR signal their intent to dominate the remainder of the tournament, while the Gulf Giants are left to rethink their strategies under pressure.
