Published: 18 Dec 2025, 06:53 am

Jagannath University’s Central Students’ Union (JAKSU) and Hall Students’ Union elections have witnessed the withdrawal of eight candidates from the race, while nine previously disqualified central council candidates have successfully regained their eligibility.

The official notification, signed by Professor Mostafa Hasan, Chief Election Commissioner of JAKSU, was released on Wednesday, detailing the candidates who withdrew their nominations.

The candidates who stepped down include:

Vice President aspirants: Tausin Islam and Mithun Chandra Roy

General Secretary aspirant: Mehedi Hasan Shuvo

Education and Research Secretary aspirants: Md. Riyad Sarkar and Ujjwal Chandra Roy

Library and Seminar Secretary aspirant: Asif Hossain

Executive Members aspirants: Md. Ashraful Islam and Abubakar Sompad

Professor Hasan stated, “After careful scrutiny, we have finalised the list of 189 candidates for the central and hall councils. Among the candidates removed, two tested positive in the mandatory doping tests, while others either failed to appear or were subject to various complaints. Over the past two days, eight candidates have voluntarily withdrawn their nominations.”

Initially, the preliminary list excluded 47 candidates due to doping test results and complaints. The final central council candidate list now comprises 156 candidates contesting 21 positions. Following appeals, nine candidates had their nominations reinstated, and with eight voluntary withdrawals, the central council now has 157 confirmed candidates. For the Hall Students’ Union, 33 candidates are contesting 13 posts, making the total number of candidates in the elections 190.

The election process began with 249 nominations submitted on 17–18 November for 34 positions. After verification, the preliminary list of 231 candidates was released on 24 November, followed by revised schedules announced by the Syndicate on 4 December. Doping tests were conducted on 9–10 December, and the final candidate list was published on 11 December.

According to the schedule, campaigning will run from 12:00 am on 15 December until 12:00 am on 27 December, with the poll and counting set for 30 December, after which the results will be declared.
