In a tragic and shocking incident in Mohanpur, Rajshahi, a 25-year-old man, Zubair Hossain, lost his life after being crushed under the wheels of an excavator. The accident occurred late on Wednesday night, 17th December, in Boropalsa village, within Dhurail Union. Following the incident, enraged local residents set the excavator on fire.
Zubair, the son of Rafiz from the same village, was primarily involved in agricultural work. According to his family, the young man was attempting to prevent illegal pond excavation on farmland when the incident occurred. They allege that he was deliberately run over by the excavator in a premeditated attack, calling for a thorough investigation and justice.
The excavator operator, Abdul Hamid, 28, a resident of Kadimhamjani, Uttarpara in Tangail district, has been detained by police. Eyewitnesses recounted that the confrontation began when Zubair and local villagers tried to stop the excavation of the pond, intended to destroy cultivated farmland. A verbal altercation ensued between the villagers and several individuals from Bhimanagar, which ultimately escalated into a physical clash.
During the chaos, Zubair reportedly fell under the excavator’s wheels and sustained severe injuries. He was immediately rushed to Mohanpur Upazila Health Complex, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. His body remains in the morgue pending further formalities.
Mohanpur Upazila Executive Officer, Fahima Binte Akhtar, visited the site of the incident and the home of the deceased. She confirmed that the locals were attempting to prevent the excavation of the pond on farmland and that a confrontation had taken place. The officer added that she had been informed that the excavator had been set ablaze after the accident and that legal action would be pursued against all responsible parties.
Meanwhile, the Officer-in-Charge of Mohanpur Police Station, SM Moinuddin, stated that efforts are underway to bring the body for post-mortem examination. The excavator operator has been arrested, and once legal procedures are complete, the body will be handed over to the family.
The incident has shocked the local community, raising concerns about the safety of agricultural lands and the escalating tensions between residents and those involved in construction or excavation projects. Zubair’s family continues to demand justice, insisting that the death was not accidental but a deliberate act of murder.
