In a disturbing sequence of events in Chandina, Comilla, a father has been arrested for allegedly extorting money from local residents by exploiting the murder case of his own daughter. The unfolding scandal has left the community in shock, highlighting how unresolved crimes can trigger further tragedy.
The chain of events began on 7 December 2025, when the body of housewife Sabina Akter was discovered in her bathroom. Her father, Maynal Hossain, subsequently filed a murder case implicating three named individuals and four unknown suspects, including members of Sabina’s in-laws, alleging their involvement in her death.
Following the filing, Maynal Hossain reportedly began pressuring residents in the area, threatening them with criminal implication unless they paid him money. He is said to have employed close associates—Monir Hossain, Ripon, and Mahbub—to carry out intimidation, later overseeing the collection personally. Over the following three months, at least twelve individuals were allegedly extorted, with the total sum of money reportedly reaching approximately 900,000 BDT.
The latest incident occurred on 21 March 2026, coinciding with Eid, in Hosainpur village of Gallai Union. Maynal targeted his deceased daughter’s brother-in-law, Hasan, demanding payment under threats of arrest. When Hasan, a day labourer, failed to meet the demands, he was forcibly dragged from his home by Maynal’s associates.
During the confrontation, Hasan’s mother, Karima Khatun, and her 21-year-old disabled granddaughter, Morium Akter, intervened. In the chaos, Morium was reportedly assaulted, lost consciousness, and tragically died at the scene. Chandina police immediately filed a case, leading to Maynal Hossain’s arrest as the principal suspect.
Chandina Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Atikur Rahman, confirmed the arrest, stating: “The father has been exploiting his daughter’s murder case to coerce local residents for money. The recent fatality during Eid is a direct consequence of these coercive tactics. The case is under full investigation, including forensic examination of the deceased.”
