Police in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar have rescued four individuals, including a Rohingya man, from a remote hill hideout allegedly used by a Malaysia-bound human trafficking syndicate, in a targeted operation that has exposed yet another illegal migration network operating in the region.
The rescue operation was carried out on Sunday (29 March) in the afternoon in the Noakhali Para area of Baharchhara Union, where officers conducted a raid on a makeshift camp located in a hilly and densely forested area frequently associated with trafficking routes.
According to police officials, members of the trafficking syndicate had gathered at least 15 to 16 men and women at the hideout, allegedly preparing them for illegal transport to Malaysia by sea routes.
Acting on intelligence, a police team from the Baharchhara Police Investigation Centre launched the operation. As officers approached the site, the traffickers reportedly fled into the surrounding hills, taking advantage of the rugged terrain to escape arrest.
Although the majority of the suspects managed to flee, police succeeded in rescuing four individuals from the location.
Among the rescued victims, three were identified as local residents from different areas of Cox’s Bazar district, while one was a Rohingya refugee from a nearby camp.
| Name | Age | Origin |
|---|---|---|
| Shamsul Alam | 36 | Khurushkul, Cox’s Bazar |
| Ramzan | 24 | Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar |
| Ziabul | 21 | Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar |
| Rahimullah | 48 | Balukhali Rohingya Camp |
Authorities confirmed that the individuals were found in distressed conditions but did not sustain serious physical injuries during the operation.
Baharchhara Police Investigation Centre Inspector Durjoy Biswas confirmed the operation and stated that the hideout was being used by an organised human trafficking syndicate preparing for an imminent illegal journey to Malaysia.
He added that intelligence suggests the group had assembled the victims over the course of several days, keeping them confined at the hill location before arranging onward transport.
Police believe the syndicate was operating under the leadership of a trafficker identified as Faruk, a resident of Noakhali Para in Teknaf’s Kaharchhara Union. He is suspected of coordinating recruitment, transportation, and financial arrangements for the illegal crossings.
Despite the swift police action, the suspected traffickers, including the alleged ringleader Faruk, managed to escape during the raid. Officers reported that the rugged and forested terrain provided cover for their immediate disappearance.
Law enforcement agencies have since intensified search operations in and around the hill tracts, with additional patrols deployed to prevent further trafficking activity and to track down those involved.
Authorities have confirmed that efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest all members of the network.
The incident highlights continuing concerns over human trafficking networks operating along Bangladesh’s southern border regions, particularly in Cox’s Bazar, which has long been a transit point for irregular migration attempts to Southeast Asia.
Police officials have reiterated their commitment to dismantling such syndicates and have urged the public to report suspicious activities, especially in remote hill areas frequently used for clandestine gatherings.
Investigations into the latest case remain ongoing, with law enforcement agencies expanding their search for the escaped suspects and working to determine the full scale of the trafficking operation.
