The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has formally demanded compensation from Iran, alleging extensive damage to its territory and infrastructure caused by recent missile and drone strikes attributed to Tehran amid the ongoing regional conflict.
The claim was made on Sunday by Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the UAE President, in a post published on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). His statement marks a significant escalation in diplomatic rhetoric between Gulf states and Iran, as tensions in the region continue to intensify.
The demand comes as hostilities linked to the wider Middle Eastern conflict, which began on 28 February, have now entered their 30th consecutive day, with continuing reports of cross-border strikes and retaliatory actions involving multiple regional actors.
In his statement, Gargash argued that any political resolution to the crisis affecting Gulf Arab states must include several non-negotiable conditions. These, he said, are essential to ensuring long-term regional stability and preventing future escalation.
He outlined three key requirements:
Gargash emphasised that compensation should specifically address destruction linked to civilian areas and key industrial facilities, which he claimed were affected by recent strikes.
The UAE adviser further accused Tehran of having misled neighbouring states prior to the outbreak of hostilities, alleging that Iran had engaged in deceptive diplomatic conduct before the escalation of the current conflict.
He described Iran’s actions as part of what he termed a “deliberate pattern of aggression”, arguing that such behaviour has significantly undermined trust and regional stability.
In particularly strong language, Gargash characterised Iran as a “primary threat to Gulf Arab security”, reflecting the increasingly strained relations between Tehran and several Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states.
The UAE’s demand comes amid a broader cycle of retaliatory claims and counterclaims between Iran and its regional adversaries. Tehran had earlier sought compensation from both the United States and Israel for damages it alleges were inflicted during military operations linked to the same conflict.
The UAE’s latest position represents a reciprocal diplomatic response, signalling that Gulf states may now pursue financial claims as part of any future peace negotiations or settlement frameworks.
Analysts note that such positions underscore the deepening complexity of the conflict, which has expanded beyond direct military engagement to include legal, diplomatic, and economic dimensions.
| Party | Position on Compensation | Alleged Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Iran | Previously demanded compensation from US and Israel | Alleged military strikes causing damage in Iran |
| United Arab Emirates | Now demanding compensation from Iran | Alleged missile and drone attacks on UAE infrastructure |
| Gulf Arab States (position outlined by UAE) | Call for non-aggression guarantees | Regional security and civilian protection concerns |
The UAE’s public stance reflects growing unease among Gulf Arab nations over the trajectory of the conflict and its potential spillover effects on regional stability, energy infrastructure, and civilian safety.
By linking compensation to broader security guarantees, Abu Dhabi appears to be advocating a more structured post-conflict framework, one that would not only address immediate damage claims but also establish long-term mechanisms to prevent renewed escalation.
However, Iran has not yet issued an official response to the UAE’s latest demand.
As the conflict continues into its second month, diplomatic observers expect further exchanges of accusations and counter-demands, raising concerns that the dispute may become increasingly entrenched within regional political and legal frameworks rather than moving towards immediate de-escalation.
