A period of serious unrest broke out in Saturia upazila of Manikganj district after allegations emerged that a local man made derogatory remarks concerning Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The incident triggered widespread tension, road blockades, confrontations with law enforcement agencies, and ultimately resulted in injuries to a police officer before authorities managed to restore order following an extended security operation.
The individual at the centre of the allegations has been identified as 27-year-old Md Parvez Hossain Imon, son of Mizanur Rahman Liton, a fertiliser trader from the Kandapara area. He is reported to be serving as an agricultural sub-assistant officer. Police have confirmed that he has been taken into custody in connection with the incident, and that legal proceedings are now underway.
According to local accounts and witness statements, the controversy began on the evening of 24 March at approximately 6:30pm inside a clothing shop located in Kandapara market. It is alleged that Imon made comments regarded as offensive and provocative regarding the marital life of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The remarks reportedly caused immediate outrage among those present, leading to a heated exchange and growing tension within the local community.
The situation escalated significantly two days later, on Thursday (26 March), when at around 6:45pm a group of agitated residents detained the accused near Kandapara Jame Mosque. News of the detention spread rapidly, drawing a larger crowd to the area. Within a short period, demonstrators began blocking the Saturia–Goalra regional road, bringing traffic to a complete standstill and staging protests demanding swift punitive action.
Upon receiving reports of the unrest, joint teams from the Bangladesh Army’s Manikganj Sadar camp, district police units, and Saturia police station were deployed to the scene. However, attempts by law enforcement officers to take custody of the accused were initially resisted by sections of the crowd, which further heightened tensions.
The confrontation soon escalated into violence. Protesters reportedly threw bricks and stones at police personnel and damaged several vehicles caught in or near the blocked roadway. At approximately 9:10pm, Constable Md Ariful Islam sustained a serious head injury after being struck by a brick. He was immediately taken for medical treatment after suffering significant bleeding.
As the situation deteriorated, senior officials including Lieutenant Mostahid of the Bangladesh Army, Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Md Salauddin, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations) Mahram Ali, and Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Iqbal Hossain arrived at the scene along with additional security personnel. Their coordinated response involved sustained negotiation efforts, crowd management strategies, and operational deployment designed to de-escalate tensions.
After nearly three hours of continuous intervention, authorities eventually succeeded in bringing the situation under control. The accused was safely removed from the scene under police protection and transferred to Saturia Police Station. Officials confirmed that order was gradually restored in the area following the operation.
