Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has elected former Minister of Economic Security Sanai Takaichi as its new leader, bringing her to the threshold of becoming the country’s first female Prime Minister.
According to the Associated Press (AP), in the final round of the LDP leadership election held on Saturday, 4 October, Takaichi defeated Shinjiro Koizumi, the son of former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and the current Minister of Agriculture.
Reuters reports that Sanai Takaichi is well-known in Japanese politics for her hardline conservative ideology.
Before the runoff vote, addressing party members, Takaichi said:
"People across the country wanted to know what the LDP truly stands for — that question inspired me. I want to transform public concern into hope."
The AP notes that Takaichi’s position as Prime Minister will be formally confirmed in the parliamentary vote in mid-October. Upon assuming office, she will face a series of diplomatic challenges.
The international community and citizens across Japan are closely watching whether Takaichi’s leadership will steer the LDP in a new direction.
