A tragic incident has cast a shadow over the reopening of Mexico City’s iconic Azteca Stadium—now officially known as Estadio Banorte—after a spectator lost his life on the very day the refurbished venue welcomed fans back ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup preparations.

The fatal accident occurred on Saturday evening, shortly before the scheduled friendly between Mexico and Portugal. According to reports cited by Reuters, the man attempted to descend from the second tier of a VIP box seating area to the lower level. In doing so, he reportedly tried to climb along the exterior structure of the stand, during which he lost his footing and fell from height. Security officials later suggested that the individual may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

Emergency responders were quickly deployed, but despite prompt intervention, the spectator succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The atmosphere inside the stadium, which had been filled with anticipation following extensive renovation works, was immediately overshadowed by the unfolding tragedy.

In an official statement shared via social media, the Mexico City Attorney General’s Office confirmed that a full investigation has been launched. Authorities are currently reviewing CCTV footage from within the stadium and its entry points, while also collecting statements from witnesses present at the time. A post-mortem examination has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death and to establish the victim’s physical condition prior to the fall. Investigators are also assessing whether any liability may be attributed to lapses in safety protocols or individual negligence.

The stadium itself holds a distinguished place in football history. Originally known as Estadio Azteca, it famously hosted the finals of the 1970 and 1986 FIFA World Cups. Following its renovation, the venue is set to become the first in history to stage matches across three separate World Cup tournaments when the 2026 edition commences.
