Tensions between Islamabad and Washington have reached a critical flashpoint following the admission by United States officials that US Marines opened fire on protesters outside the American Consulate in Karachi. The unrest was ignited by the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in a joint military operation conducted by Israel and the United States—an event that has triggered a wave of anti-Western sentiment across the Islamic world.
On Sunday, a massive demonstration converged on the US Consulate in Karachi, Pakistan's largest city. As news of the Iranian leader’s death spread, the atmosphere turned volatile. According to eyewitness accounts and local reports, the protesters managed to breach the perimeter of the diplomatic mission, partially dismantling an outer security wall.
In the ensuing chaos, live ammunition was discharged, resulting in the deaths of at least 11 people. While initial confusion surrounded the identity of the shooters—with suspicion falling on both local Pakistani police and private security contractors—two US officials confirmed on Monday (2 March) that US Marine security guards were among those who used lethal force.
Despite the confirmation of engagement, US officials have been careful to qualify their statements. While they acknowledge that Marines fired their weapons to protect the mission, they maintain it is "unclear" whether the 11 confirmed fatalities were caused directly by Marine fire or by other security entities on the scene, such as local law enforcement or private guards.

The admission of force by US military personnel on Pakistani soil is a rare and dangerous development. Although the US maintains no formal military bases in Pakistan, Marine Corps Embassy Security Groups are a standard fixture at diplomatic posts. However, the use of live ammunition against local nationals threatens to destabilise the already precarious diplomatic relationship between the two nations.
Sukhdev Asardas Hemdani, a spokesperson for the Sindh Government, initially stated that "security personnel" were responsible for the gunfire but stopped short of identifying specific units. In a more assertive move, Sindh’s Senior Minister, Sharjil Memon, announced the formation of a high-powered Joint Investigation Team (JIT). The team has been tasked with producing a comprehensive fact-finding report within 15 days to determine the exact sequence of events and assign accountability for the loss of life.
As funeral processions for the deceased begin in Karachi, the city remains on high alert. The findings of the JIT will be crucial in determining whether this incident remains a local tragedy or escalates into a broader international crisis.
