Remembering Abul Fazal’s Enduring Legacy

“Where knowledge is limited, intellect becomes rigid; where intellect is rigid, freedom is impossible.”

Few quotations have captured the essence of intellectual freedom in Bengali society as powerfully as these words. They remain inseparably linked with Abul Fazal, one of the foremost pioneers of Bengali literature, liberal thought and secular humanism. A distinguished educationist, essayist, novelist, social thinker and progressive intellectual, Abul Fazal devoted his life to the pursuit of knowledge and reason, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations.

Born on 17 July 1903 in Keochia village of Satkania, Chattogram, Abul Fazal grew up in a family deeply rooted in religious scholarship. His father, Maulvi Fazlur Rahman, served as the Imam of Chattogram Juma Mosque. Although his early education began in a madrasa, his academic journey gradually expanded into modern higher education, reflecting his lifelong commitment to intellectual growth and open inquiry.

He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Dhaka in 1928, earned a Bachelor of Teaching degree from the Dhaka Teachers’ Training College in 1931, and later obtained a Master’s degree in Bengali Language and Literature from the University of Calcutta in 1940. His educational achievements laid the foundation for a career dedicated to both scholarship and public service.

Abul Fazal initially served as an imam before embracing the teaching profession. In 1941, he joined Krishnanagar College as a lecturer in the Department of Bengali. Two years later, he was transferred to Chattogram College, where he taught for many years and eventually retired as a professor in 1956. His influence as an educator extended far beyond the classroom, shaping students through his advocacy of critical thinking and independent judgement.

Following Bangladesh’s independence, he was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Chittagong in 1973. His leadership came at a significant period in the country’s educational development. In 1975, he also served as a member of the Bangladesh Government’s Advisory Council on Education and Culture, contributing to national discussions on education and cultural policy.

While studying at the University of Dhaka, Abul Fazal became actively involved in the establishment of the Muslim Sahitya Samaj, a literary and intellectual organisation that sought to challenge superstition, dogmatism and blind conformity within society. He was elected its secretary in 1930. Through the organisation’s journal, Shikha, emerged the influential “Movement for Intellectual Freedom”, whose guiding principle became the now-famous declaration: “Where knowledge is limited, intellect becomes rigid; where intellect is rigid, freedom is impossible.”

That philosophy shaped every aspect of Abul Fazal’s literary and intellectual career. His writings consistently championed rational thought, humanism, truth, patriotism, communal harmony and social justice. Rather than simply documenting society, his work encouraged readers to question inherited beliefs and embrace reason as the foundation of progress.

He was equally recognised for his moral courage. During moments of national significance, he never hesitated to defend cultural freedom and democratic values. In 1967, when the Pakistani authorities imposed restrictions on the broadcasting of Rabindra Sangeet, Abul Fazal publicly opposed the decision, standing firmly in defence of Bengali language, literature and cultural identity. His unwavering commitment to these ideals secured him a lasting place in the intellectual history of Bengal.

His literary contributions span an impressive range of genres, including novels, short stories, essays, plays, autobiographical writings, religious studies and travel literature. Among his most celebrated works are Chouchir, Prodip O Potongo, Matir Prithibi, Bichitra Katha, Ranga Probhat, Rekhachitra and Durdiner Dinlipi. Collectively, these works reflect his profound engagement with society, morality and the human condition.

In recognition of his exceptional contribution to Bengali literature and culture, Abul Fazal received numerous prestigious honours throughout his lifetime. These included the Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1962, the President’s National Literary Award in 1963, the Adamjee Literary Award in 1966, the Nasiruddin Gold Medal in 1980, the Muktadhara Literary Award in 1981 and the Abdul Hai Literary Medal in 1982. The University of Dhaka also conferred upon him an honorary doctorate in 1974, acknowledging his enduring influence on literature and education.

Abul Fazal passed away in Chattogram on 4 May 1983. Yet his intellectual legacy has remained remarkably resilient. His writings continue to serve as an enduring reminder that knowledge, reason and freedom are inseparable, and that genuine social progress depends upon an open and questioning mind.

On the anniversary of his birth, scholars, readers and admirers remember Abul Fazal not merely as a celebrated writer, but as one of the leading architects of free thought in Bengal. His ideals, literary achievements and unwavering belief in the power of knowledge continue to illuminate the path for future generations.
