Bangladesh fast bowler Shariful Islam is confident the side can build on its commanding nine-wicket victory over Australia and secure a series triumph in the second and final Test in Mackay.
Shariful joined the Bangladesh squad ahead of the match after missing the opening Test because of injury. The left-arm pacer has since completed his rehabilitation and believes he is ready to return to competitive cricket if the team management selects him for the playing XI.
Although he was not involved in the first Test, Shariful closely followed his team-mates’ performance and shared in the celebrations after Bangladesh secured an emphatic victory. Speaking to the media before training, he said he was delighted to feel part of the success despite watching the match from outside the playing group. He also joked about managing to appear in the team’s post-match celebration photographs.
For Shariful, the priority now is to maintain the momentum created by the first Test. He believes Bangladesh’s success came from a collective effort rather than the performance of one particular department. Batting, bowling and fielding all need to function effectively if the team is to produce another strong performance against Australia.
His absence from the first Test was the result of injury, but Shariful does not regard the setback as something to dwell on. Instead, he has viewed the period of rest and rehabilitation as an opportunity to prepare his body properly for a return to action.
Injuries are an unavoidable part of professional sport, and Shariful said there was little point in treating his enforced absence negatively. The time away from competitive cricket allowed him to concentrate on recovery, and he now feels physically prepared to contribute to the team.
Whether he plays in Mackay, however, will depend on the team’s requirements and the selectors’ decision. Shariful stressed that he remains ready whenever an opportunity comes his way. His immediate responsibility is to stay prepared and ensure that he can perform if called upon.
Bangladesh’s pace attack attracted considerable attention during the opening Test, with Nahid Rana among the bowlers to make an impression. Shariful’s name has also featured in discussions involving former Australian cricketers, something he regards as encouraging for Bangladesh cricket.
He believes recognition from overseas players and former cricketers can be a positive sign for the country’s fast-bowling development. For a young pace attack, such attention also reflects the growing interest in Bangladesh’s ability to produce quality fast bowlers.
Despite missing the opening match, Shariful insists he does not feel left behind. He had supported his team-mates before the Test and was particularly pleased when Bangladesh completed the victory. The result, he said, brought him immense satisfaction because it gave people across Bangladesh something to celebrate.
Shariful also revealed that former Bangladesh pace-bowling coach Allan Donald had contacted him personally. Donald sent him a message wishing him well during his recovery and referred to the possibility of his return for the next match.
Bangladesh now have a clear opportunity in Mackay. After winning the first Test by nine wickets, they need another disciplined performance to complete a series victory. The team will be keen to avoid complacency and instead reproduce the intensity and organisation that helped them dominate the opening match.
Shariful believes the key will be to remain focused throughout the Test rather than looking too far ahead. Taking responsibility session by session, executing their plans and maintaining discipline across all three departments will be crucial.
For Bangladesh, the equation is straightforward: another strong team performance could deliver a notable series win in Australia. Shariful hopes to play his part, but regardless of whether he takes the field, his message is clear—the team must remain united, stick to its plans and make the most of the opportunity now in front of them.
