In Shreepur, Gazipur, allegations have emerged of medical negligence following the death of a young mother at Life Care Hospital, located at Maona Chourasta. Relatives and local residents, outraged by the incident, reportedly vandalised parts of the hospital, claiming that staff—including doctors and nurses—abandoned the premises after leaving the patient’s body behind.
The deceased, Ruma Akter, 25, was the wife of Md. Manik Mia from Ujilab village in Shreepur. While the newborn delivered via caesarean section remains healthy, relatives allege that the hospital staff acted irresponsibly after the mother’s death.
According to witnesses and family members, the sequence of events is as follows:
| Date & Time | Event | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Sunday, 10:00 PM | Surgery Begins | Ruma Akter undergoes caesarean section at Life Care Hospital. |
| Sunday, 12:00 AM | Newborn Delivered | Baby is delivered, but relatives receive no update on the mother’s condition. |
| Sunday, 2:00 AM | Death Occurs | Ruma Akter dies during the night. |
| Monday, 10:00 AM | Body Abandoned | Hospital staff leave Ruma’s body outside the hospital in an ambulance and disappear. |
| Monday, Morning | Vandalism | Relatives and locals protest by damaging hospital property. |
Ruma’s sister, Kamrun Nahar, told reporters that the family was not informed of Ruma’s critical condition during the night. “After the surgery, they removed the baby, but no information was shared regarding my sister’s condition. At some point in the night, they transported her to a hospital in Dhaka without notifying us. Finally, in the morning, they abandoned her body outside the hospital and vanished,” she said.
Another relative, Manjuma Akter, accused the hospital of negligence, claiming that “the surgery was performed by nurses without the presence of qualified doctors, which led to her death.”
Gazipur Civil Surgeon Mamunur Rashid confirmed receiving complaints regarding the maternal death. He stated, “The Shreepur Upazila administration will conduct a mobile court visit to the hospital to investigate the matter.”
Efforts to obtain comments from the hospital owner, Md. Parvez, or other officials were unsuccessful. Shreepur police inspector (Investigation) Zafar Ali confirmed to First Alo that the police arrived at the scene following the incident. “Vandalism occurred after the patient’s death, but the situation is now under control,” he said.
This tragic event has raised serious concerns about maternal healthcare in the region, highlighting potential gaps in hospital management, surgical oversight, and patient communication. Authorities are expected to take strict measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
