Nepal Election: Pushpa Kamal Dahal Holds Ground

In Nepal’s general elections, the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) is on the brink of a historic victory, poised to secure a two-thirds majority in the 275-member House of Representatives. This remarkable surge marks a decisive shift in Nepali politics, displacing the country’s traditional parties and signalling the rise of a new political generation.

The party’s young leader, Balendra Shah, is set to become Nepal’s next Prime Minister. A former rapper who later transitioned into politics, Shah previously served as the Mayor of Kathmandu. At just 35 years of age, he is now on the threshold of leading the nation, embodying a blend of youth and dynamism that has captured the public imagination.

The momentum follows last year’s Jan-G movement, which resulted in the ousting of KP Sharma Oli’s government. Since then, the political climate in Nepal has been characterised by calls for change, a sentiment that has clearly resonated in this election. Under Shah’s leadership, the “Jan-G wave” has toppled many veteran and influential politicians, though one notable exception remains: Pushpa Kamal Dahal, widely known as ‘Prachanda’.

Once a Maoist guerrilla leader, Prachanda spent over a decade fighting against the monarchy before entering mainstream politics. He has served three separate terms as Nepal’s Prime Minister and remains a central figure in the Nepali Communist Party (NCP). In the recent elections, voters have once again shown their confidence in him, electing him from the Rukum East constituency. This victory marks his fifth consecutive success in parliamentary elections.

Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s Prime Ministerial Tenures:

Term Duration
1st August 2008 – May 2009
2nd August 2016 – June 2017
3rd December 2022 – July 2024

Meanwhile, the Jan-G movement also dealt a significant blow to former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who contested from Jhapa-5, a traditional stronghold in the Terai region. Even in his own fortress, Oli was defeated, underscoring the sweeping appeal of Balendra Shah and the RSP.

Other prominent political figures were similarly unseated. Gagan Thapa of the Nepali Congress, contesting from Sarlahi-4, was defeated by RSP candidate Amaresh Kumar Singh, highlighting the scale of change across multiple constituencies.

The results of this election reflect a profound generational shift in Nepali politics. Young leaders like Shah are challenging the dominance of established political veterans, and parties rooted in traditional ideologies are being forced to adapt or face irrelevance. With the RSP poised to form a commanding government, Nepal is witnessing a political transformation that could redefine its governance for years to come.
