Sleeping Man Found Throat-Slit Dead in Netrokona Home

A 35-year-old man was allegedly killed by having his throat slit while he was asleep inside his home in Netrokona. The incident took place in the western part of Duani Dudhkhura village, under Kaliara Gabragati Union in Netrokona Sadar Upazila, police and local sources said.

The deceased was identified as Mahful Mia, son of the late Yakub Ali. He was a father of three children.

Police believe the killing occurred at some point between midnight on Saturday and 5am on Sunday. The exact time of the attack, however, has not yet been established.

According to police and local residents, Mahful had eaten dinner on Saturday night before going to sleep in his room. At some point in the early hours, his mother woke up and noticed that the door to his room was open. She then switched on a torch and discovered her son lying inside the room in a blood-soaked condition, with his throat apparently cut.

Her cries alerted people living nearby, who rushed to the house. Police were subsequently informed and officers from Netrokona Model Police Station went to the scene.

The police prepared an inquest report on the body and collected various pieces of evidence from the scene. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the killing and are attempting to determine how the attacker entered the house and whether the victim knew the assailant.

The incident has caused concern among residents of the village, where the circumstances of the killing remain unclear. Local people said Mahful’s wife had reportedly left for her parental home around two to three years ago. His two daughters currently live with their grandmother, according to residents. The supplied report also states that some locals had previously heard of disputes involving Mahful and others over land.

Several residents also alleged that Mahful regularly gambled. However, these claims could not be independently verified, and there is no indication at this stage that they are directly connected to the murder.

Police have reportedly been looking into a possible land dispute involving Mahful and a neighbouring resident as one potential motive. Investigators, however, are considering multiple possibilities and have not yet reached a definitive conclusion about the motive behind the killing.

The case comes as investigators continue to gather evidence and assess the circumstances surrounding the victim’s final hours. Police are expected to examine the crime scene evidence, statements from family members and neighbours, and any known disputes involving the deceased as part of the investigation.

Netrokona Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abul Khayer said police had collected several pieces of evidence from the scene. He said an investigation was under way to establish the actual motive and identify those responsible for the killing.

The officer added that necessary legal action would be taken once the investigation establishes the facts of the case.
