A 35-year-old man has been arrested in Pabna’s Faridpur upazila for allegedly killing his mother after she refused to give him money for drugs, police said.
The incident took place at around 9.30am on Tuesday, 20 October, in the Jholapara area of Lakshikole village under B.L. Bari Union.
The victim, Surjo Khatun, 50, was the wife of Md Lokman Sardar and a resident of the village. The incident has sparked shock and grief among local residents.
According to police and local sources, the accused, Uddin Sardar, was allegedly addicted to drugs and frequently argued with his parents over money to support his habit. Such disputes reportedly occurred on several occasions.
On Tuesday morning, Surjo Khatun was cooking in the kitchen when her son allegedly asked her for money to buy drugs. When she refused, an argument broke out between them.
During the altercation, Uddin allegedly used a sickle found in the kitchen to slit his mother’s throat, killing her. He then fled the house, according to the initial account of the incident.
Police arrived at the scene after receiving information about the killing and began efforts to locate the suspect.
Acting on a tip-off, officers arrested Uddin at around 11am from a neighbouring house. Police said they had to cut through a metal grille to enter the property and apprehend him.
According to police, the sickle allegedly used in the killing was recovered from the same house based on information provided by the accused.
Faridpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Manjurul Hasan Masud said the body had been recovered and taken to the police station. Arrangements were being made to send it to the morgue at Pabna General Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
The process of filing a case was under way, the officer added.
The post-mortem examination and further investigation are expected to help establish the circumstances surrounding the death. Police have not yet provided further details about the investigation.
The incident has also drawn attention to the potential consequences of substance misuse and disputes within families. Experts generally stress the importance of access to treatment, rehabilitation and appropriate support for people struggling with substance dependence, alongside measures to ensure the safety of family members.
However, the precise circumstances of the killing and the accused’s legal responsibility will be determined through the investigation and judicial process.
