The long-awaited release of Stranger Things 5 has led to a major technical glitch for Netflix. The highly popular series, created by the Duffer Brothers, dropped its first four episodes of the fifth season on November 27. As soon as the episodes were made available, excitement erupted among fans, with many eager to binge-watch the series. However, Netflix couldn’t handle the overwhelming demand, and the platform crashed just minutes after the release.
Viewers, particularly those trying to stream the episodes on their TV sets, reported issues with accessing the service, sparking frustration on social media. According to outage tracking site DownDetector, nearly 14,000 users in the United States complained about Netflix disruptions, while many users in India also reported being disconnected, with around 200 complaints lodged during peak times.
In an email to Reuters, Netflix acknowledged the issue, stating, “Some customers experienced temporary problems when streaming on TV devices. However, service was restored to all accounts within five minutes.”
This isn’t the first time Netflix has experienced a crash during a major event. In 2024, the platform faced outages during the live broadcast of the Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul boxing match and the Love Is Blind reunion. A similar disruption occurred in 2022 when the final two episodes of Stranger Things season 4 were released.
Stranger Things 5 marks the return of the beloved show after a three-year break. Set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, in the 1980s, the series continues to capture the hearts of audiences worldwide with its thrilling mix of supernatural elements and nostalgic 80s references.
