Jahangirnagar University (JU) has taken stringent disciplinary action against a student following the discovery of a significant quantity of alcohol in a university residence. The administration has suspended the student, Fozle Azwad, for a period of one year after 21 bottles of alcoholic beverages were seized from a room in the National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall.
The official announcement came on Monday afternoon through an office order signed by the university’s acting Registrar, A. B. M. Azizur Rahman. According to the order, the disciplinary measure was enacted in accordance with Section 4(1)(c) of the University’s Student Disciplinary Code, 2018, following an investigative report submitted by the hall authorities.
Fozle Azwad is a third-year student in the Government and Politics Department, belonging to the 52nd batch, and is a resident of Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall. The incident, however, took place at Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall, in room number 723. University sources indicate that the hall authorities received credible information regarding the presence of illicit substances in the room, prompting a swift evening raid on Sunday.
During the search, several members of the hall student council were also present to ensure the process remained transparent. Authorities discovered 21 bottles of alcohol concealed in the locker and beneath the bed. Upon questioning, Azwad admitted that the alcohol had been sourced from a border area in Jamalpur.
This case has attracted further attention due to Azwad’s recent political engagement. He had contested the position of Social Services Secretary in the Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall panel of the Central Students’ Union (JAKSU) elections, held on 11 September. However, the branch of the political party with which he was affiliated clarified that he is not an active member.
The university has emphasised its zero-tolerance policy towards violations of its disciplinary code, particularly regarding substance abuse within residential halls. Officials have stated that further measures will be taken to maintain a safe and conducive learning environment on campus.
