Investigators in the United States are assembling fragmented pieces of evidence in an effort to clarify the circumstances surrounding the deaths of two Bangladeshi doctoral students, Jamal Ahmed Limon and Nahida Sultana Brishti. The case has drawn attention as authorities continue to link recovered remains, missing person reports, and surveillance footage.
Limon and Brishti were PhD students at the University of South Florida in the state of Florida. Both were reported missing on 16 April. Several days later, on a Friday, police recovered the mutilated body of Limon from near a bridge in the Tampa Bay area. On the same day, law enforcement arrested a United States national, Hisham Abugharbeh, who has been identified as a suspect in the case. He was reportedly Limon’s roommate.
Brishti has not yet been formally identified among the recovered remains. Two days after the discovery of Limon’s body beneath the Howard Frankland Bridge, police recovered additional dismembered human remains from a separate location. These remains were found in a water body located several kilometres from where Limon’s body had been discovered.
According to a criminal affidavit, on 26 April, dismembered remains were recovered on the southern side of the Howard Frankland Bridge. The affidavit states that clothing found with the remains closely resembles the outfit seen on Nahida Sultana Brishti in CCTV footage recorded the last time she was observed alive. The document notes a direct comparison between the garments recovered and those visible in surveillance footage.
The affidavit specifically states that the clothing on the recovered remains matches the distinctive attire worn by Brishti in the final known CCTV sighting, suggesting consistency between the two. However, official identification of the remains has not yet been confirmed publicly.
Hisham Abugharbeh has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder. His bail application was rejected by a court on Tuesday, and he has been ordered to remain in custody pending further legal proceedings.
