A seventeen-year-old youth was found dead beside a dragon fruit orchard in Maheshpur upazila of Jhenaidah district on Saturday morning, following an encounter with an illegal live wire trap set up around the agricultural field.
The deceased has been identified as Jihad Hossain, 17, son of Delwar Hossain, a resident of Chunniait village within the upazila.
According to family members and local sources, Jihad stepped out of his house on Friday night after having dinner. When he failed to return home, his family initiated a search across the surrounding areas throughout the night. On Saturday morning, local residents spotted his motionless body lying adjacent to a dragon fruit farm owned by Tuhin, son of Abdul Kuddus from the neighbouring Bhairaba village.
Upon receiving the information, a team from Maheshpur Police Station rushed to the scene to recover the body and complete preliminary inquest formalities.
Initial police investigations and accounts from local residents indicate that Jihad succumbed to electrocution after coming into direct contact with an electrified wire fence. Local fruit growers frequently deploy these illegal electrical traps around their commercial orchards to deter thieves and protect crops from wild animals, creating severe hazards for nearby villagers and passers-by during night hours.
Azad Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Maheshpur Police Station, confirmed the recovery of the body and stated that law enforcement officers were immediately dispatched to inspect the site. He added that necessary legal actions regarding the illegal wiring and the circumstances surrounding the death are currently underway.
