A horrific head-on collision between a passenger bus and a compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered auto-rickshaw in Mymensingh has left seven people dead, wiping out four members of a single family from Jamalpur.
The fatal accident occurred on Friday afternoon in the Dapunia Hargujir Par area along the Rahmatpur Bypass Road in Mymensingh city. According to local witnesses and police authorities, a Rajib Paribahan bus crashed head-on into the oncoming auto-rickshaw, instantly crushing the smaller vehicle into a twisted heap of metal.
All seven occupants of the auto-rickshaw—including its driver—succumbed to their injuries, transforming a routine journey into a nightmare for several households across the region.
A Devastating Loss for One Family
Six of the deceased hailed from Jamalpur district, four of whom belonged to the exact same household in Dori Hamidpur Bhatipara village under Jamalpur Sadar Upazila. The family members have been identified as Mofazzal Hossain, 55, a mason by profession; his elderly mother, Rashida Begum, 85; his daughter, Morjina, 25, who was two months pregnant; and Morjina’s five-year-old son, Minal.
The remaining victims from Jamalpur were identified as Sujon Ali, 34, from Bir Gobindabari village, and Akram Ali, 48, from Nandina Badechandi village. The seventh victim was an unidentified woman from Brahmanbaria district.
Mofazzal had worked as a mason in the Hotapara area of Gazipur for years, residing there with his wife and son. He had returned to his ancestral home in Jamalpur the day prior to collect his mother and daughter so they could live together in Gazipur.
On Friday morning at around 11:30 AM, the family set off from their village. Their plan was to take a CNG auto-rickshaw from Nandina to Mymensingh, where they intended to board a Gazipur-bound bus. Instead, their lives ended abruptly along the bypass road.
Mourning and Calls for Reckoning
As news of the tragedy reached Dori Hamidpur Bhatipara on Friday evening, grief overwhelmed the entire community. Relatives and neighbours gathered at Mofazzal’s home, where heart-wrenching scenes unfolded.
Mofazzal’s 70-year-old mother-in-law, Rohima Begum, wept inconsolably as local women attempted to comfort her. “My son-in-law provided everything I ever needed,” she lamented. “He, my granddaughter, and my great-grandson are all gone. I have lost everything.”
Mofazzal’s sister-in-law, Ismatara, recalled his eagerness to bring the family together in Gazipur, reflecting on the cruelty of losing three generations in a single stroke. Local residents expressed severe outrage over road safety conditions in the area, pointing out that buses belonging to Rajib Paribahan are frequently involved in hazardous driving and reckless collisions. Community members have demanded a thorough official investigation and strict legal action against those responsible for the crash.
Road safety advocates in Bangladesh have long raised concerns over the reckless operation of long-route buses on bypass highways, where light three-wheeler vehicles often share narrow lanes with high-speed commercial transports. Local police have initiated procedures to investigate the collision and clear the road.
