Teenager Drowned Following Football Dispute in Gaibandha

A sixteen-year-old boy was allegedly drowned by two of his friends in Gaibandha following an altercation regarding the football rivalry between Argentina and Brazil. The fatal incident occurred while the three teenagers were bathing together in a local pond.

Incident Timeline and Background

The event took place on Tuesday, 16 June, at approximately 5:30 pm in the Hawat Dighi (also locally referred to as Hawai Dighi), situated within the Ramchandrapur Union of Gaibandha Sadar Upazila. According to local sources, the three acquaintances—Sajib, Rifat, and Rahad—entered the water to bathe at around 5:00 pm.

While in the water, an argument ensued among them concerning the sporting rivalry between the Argentine and Brazilian national football teams. As the verbal dispute escalated, Sakib and Rifat reportedly collaborated to hold Rahad underwater repeatedly. This continuous submersion resulted in Rahad losing consciousness and subsequently passing away at the scene.

Profiles of the Victim and the Accused

The individuals involved in the incident have been identified by local authorities and residents as follows:

  • The Deceased: Rahad Mia, aged 16, was the son of Mokbul Hossain. He was a resident of Torofkal village within the Ramchandrapur Union.

  • The First Accused: Sakib, the son of Joban Ali, residing in the same locality.

  • The Second Accused: Rifat, the son of Saidul Islam, also from the same neighborhood.

Post-Incident Discovery and Medical Response

Following the drowning, the two accused fled the location immediately. Local residents subsequently noticed the unconscious teenager in the water. Believing he might still be alive, they retrieved him from the dighi and transported him to the Gaibandha Sadar Hospital for emergency medical attention. Upon arrival, the attending hospital physicians conducted an examination and officially pronounced the youth dead.

Police Investigation and Legal Actions

The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sadar Police Station, Abdullah Al Mamun, confirmed the incident to the media. He stated that the victim’s body was transferred to the Gaibandha Sadar Hospital morgue on Wednesday morning for a post-mortem examination.

Law enforcement officials noted that the precise medical cause of death will be conclusively determined once the autopsy report is finalized. The two accused teenagers remain at large following their flight from the crime scene. Police authorities confirmed that a targeted operation is currently underway to locate and apprehend the suspects.
