After nearly two months of suspension caused by regional conflict, Iran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport has officially resumed operations, marking a cautious step towards normalisation in the country’s disrupted aviation sector.
The airport, the principal international gateway to Tehran, had remained closed for 57 days following heightened military tensions in the region, including reported strikes involving the United States and Israel. In response to the escalating security situation, Iranian authorities had shut down parts of the national airspace, bringing major civilian aviation activity to a standstill.
According to a report published by Al Jazeera, flight operations at the airport have now restarted, albeit on a significantly reduced scale compared with pre-conflict levels. While the facility typically handled between 100 and 150 flights per day, current operations have been limited to approximately 10 to 15 flights daily. Aviation officials indicate that services are being gradually expanded as infrastructure is repaired and security assessments continue.
The reopening comes amid broader efforts to restore damaged transport infrastructure across the country. Tehran’s second airport, Mehrabad, which primarily handles domestic flights, was repeatedly affected during the hostilities. Other regional airports, including those in Tabriz and Urmia, also sustained disruption due to targeted strikes and heightened security restrictions.
Authorities have emphasised that restoring air connectivity is essential for economic recovery, humanitarian logistics, and reconnecting Iran with international routes. However, aviation analysts suggest that a full return to normal capacity may take considerable time, depending on regional stability and the pace of reconstruction.
