The recovery of the body of 75-year-old Nur Jahan Begum from a flat in Mirpur has triggered nationwide outrage in Bangladesh. Initial allegations suggested that the elderly woman passed away due to extreme neglect and a lack of maintenance by her highly educated children. Viral videos circulating on social media depicted the flat as exceptionally unhygienic, whilst witnesses claimed to have observed a white, fungus-like substance on her right eye and the presence of insects on the body.

Initial media reports, based on statements from local residents, claimed that Nur Jahan Begum had died at least a week prior to the discovery of her body, and that authorities were only alerted by a nurse after an odour began to emanate from the premises.

However, an investigation by the newspaper khaborwala found no evidence to support these initial allegations. Post-mortem officials confirmed that her death occurred within 24 hours of the body arriving at the mortuary, refuting claims of decomposition from an earlier death. Furthermore, medical experts clarified that the visible injuries on her back were not signs of decay, but were clinically identified as bedsores. These lesions frequently develop in elderly individuals subjected to prolonged immobility, where continuous pressure on specific areas of the body leads to blistering or localized tissue damage.

Nur Jahan Begum’s children hold highly established positions within professional and academic institutions. Despite the findings disproving abandonment, legal and administrative actions were initiated following the initial public outcry. On Wednesday, 3 June 2026, a Supreme Court lawyer dispatched a formal legal notice to the children. Concurrently, the Ministry of Public Administration withdrew her eldest son from his active post, attaching him directly to the ministry.

• A.K.M. Anisur Rahman (Eldest Son): A Joint Secretary to the government and a member of the Mongla Port Authority. Following his administrative withdrawal, he travelled to their ancestral village in the Uttar Upazila of Chandpur district to personally supervise his mother’s funeral and burial proceedings on 1 June.

• Dr A.K.M. Ashikur Rahman (Youngest Son): A Professor within the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). According to family accounts, he visited the flat two days prior to her death, on the day of Eid, to personally feed his mother celebratory meat.

• Fatima Nasrin Sultana (Daughter): A schoolteacher at a local academic institution in Mirpur. She owned the fourth-floor apartment located on Road 13, Block C, Section 6 in Mirpur, where Nur Jahan Begum had resided continuously for the final two years of her life.

The police recovered the body of Nur Jahan Begum on 31 May from the fourth-floor flat in Mirpur and transferred it directly to the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital morgue for an official post-mortem examination. Whilst journalists confirmed that the interior environment of the flat was unhygienic, the investigation found no evidence confirming that the children had withheld maintenance or abandoned their mother.
