Before Erling Haaland became a household name in world football, few knew that the towering Norwegian striker might have carved out a career in a completely different sport: golf. Today, Haaland is one of the most feared forwards in Europe, playing for Manchester City and constantly breaking goal-scoring records. Yet his journey might have begun on a golf course rather than a football pitch.
Haaland’s father, Alf-Inge, a former football professional, encouraged his son to explore a variety of sports. From track and field events to handball, tennis, and even golf, Erling was given the opportunity to develop multiple athletic skills. His early physical advantages — height, strength, and coordination — made him excel. At five, he achieved a world record in the standing long jump for his age, leaping an extraordinary 1.63 metres.
Alf-Inge has spoken publicly about his hopes for Erling, saying, “The handball manager in Norway wanted him to play handball. Tennis and handball nearby were also excellent.” He emphasised that multi-sport training is crucial as it develops different physical abilities and influences all areas of athletic performance positively.
Despite his potential across several sports, golf held a particular fascination for Alf-Inge. He dreamed of Erling becoming a professional golfer and encouraged him to practise weekly from the ages of 10 to 13. Haaland recalled on the The Rest Is Football podcast with Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer, “My father’s biggest dream was for me to become a professional golfer. That was his ultimate ambition.”
Growing up, Haaland’s sporting discipline was strict. He joked about never wearing gloves while playing golf because his father would have disapproved. Yet, while he practiced golf diligently, football ultimately captured his imagination and talent.
Now 25, Haaland is widely regarded as one of the best footballers in the world. He recently broke the Premier League record for fastest 100 goals and holds the fastest 10, 25, and 50-goal records in the league’s history. This season, he has scored 23 goals and provided seven assists in just 25 games across all competitions.
Haaland’s remarkable story highlights the value of athletic versatility and parental guidance while also showing that passion and talent often lead to extraordinary achievement. From golf dreams to football glory, the Norwegian star’s journey inspires young athletes worldwide to explore all opportunities and follow what excites them most.
