Thomas Dooley Targets SAFF Championship Glory to End 23-Year Drought

New national team head coach Thomas Dooley has expressed his determination to lead Bangladesh to SAFF Championship victory on home soil, aiming to break a 23-year silverware drought dating back to 2003.

The ambitious vision was shared during a grand ceremony at a Dhaka hotel, where the official logo for the upcoming tournament was unveiled. Organisers announced smartphone brand Tecno as the title sponsor for the premier South Asian football competition, which is scheduled to take place in Bangladesh from 4 to 17 November.

High Stakes for New Leadership

The upcoming campaign serves as the first major test for Dooley since taking over the reins following the departure of former head coach Javier Cabrera. A seasoned footballing figure who captained the United States at the 1998 FIFA World Cup, the former defensive midfielder brings international pedigree and a uncompromising mindset to the Bangladeshi dugout.

Addressing reporters after the unveiling ceremony, Dooley made his tactical philosophy and winning ambition clear, regardless of the opposition.

Thomas Dooley, Bangladesh Head Coach: “I want to win every match. It does not matter whether the opponent is Germany, Brazil, Argentina, or a team positioned near us in the FIFA rankings. Everything is possible. If we take this tournament seriously, there is a very good chance of bringing the trophy home. Winning the SAFF Championship is our dream, and I believe the time has come to make that dream a reality.”

Home Advantage and Squad Confidence

Bangladesh last lifted the SAFF trophy in 2003, a historic victory achieved on home turf. Players and coaching staff alike view hosting the tournament as a decisive factor in replicating that success.

Young forward Sheikh Morsalin echoed his coach’s optimism, emphasizing the need for focus and tactical discipline:

  • Sheikh Morsalin: “Without becoming overconfident, we want to play our natural game on the pitch. Winning the SAFF title is our primary objective. Winning at home is essential, and this represents a massive opportunity for us.”

Senior defender Tapu Barman highlighted the importance of crowd support while pledging to contribute at both ends of the pitch:

  • Tapu Barman: “Playing in our own country means the fans will be in the stands, giving us extra energy. We have to prove that we are the best and deserving champions. The coach has reminded me that as a defender, my primary job is to stop goals. However, during difficult moments in a match, I will also try to score if needed to help the team win.”

With the tournament approaching, Dooley issued an early call for fans to pack the stadiums, viewing national support as crucial to ending Bangladesh’s extended search for regional glory.
