Three Former Gopalganj Union Chairmen Arrested in Dhaka

Police have arrested three former union parishad chairmen and local Awami League leaders from Dhaka in connection with multiple criminal cases filed in Gopalganj. The arrests were carried out by the District Detective Branch (DB) of police during an operation in the capital’s Motijheel area on Thursday afternoon, 5 November.

The three men were subsequently taken to Gopalganj later that night. They were produced before a court on Friday morning, 6 November, and sent to jail following the legal proceedings.

The arrested individuals are MM Monir Ahmed, also known as Noni, former chairman of Borashi Union Parishad and general secretary of the union Awami League; Sharif Aminul Haque Lachchu, former chairman of Gopinathpur Union Parishad and president of the union Krishak League; and M Suparul Alam, known as Tike, former chairman of Jalalabad Union Parishad and president of the union Awami League.

All three previously held elected positions in different unions under Gopalganj Sadar Upazila. They were also associated with local political organisations, holding leadership positions within the Awami League and its affiliated bodies.

Gopalganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Aminul Islam confirmed the arrests, stating that several cases had been filed against the three men at different police stations across Gopalganj. The cases include charges under political and anti-terrorism legislation, alongside other criminal allegations.

According to the police official, the three had been living in hiding in Dhaka’s Motijheel area for an extended period. Acting on confidential information about their whereabouts, a special team from the Gopalganj District Detective Branch launched an operation in the area on Thursday afternoon.

The operation was conducted with assistance from Motijheel Police Station. Officers located and arrested the three former local government representatives before bringing them back to Gopalganj later that evening.

Police said the arrests were part of efforts to apprehend individuals wanted in connection with criminal cases registered in the district. Their alleged involvement in the cases will be dealt with through the established legal process.

The three arrests have drawn attention to the ongoing police operations involving former local political figures in Gopalganj. The district has remained a significant political stronghold of the Awami League, making developments involving its former leaders and elected representatives particularly consequential for local politics.

Following their appearance in court on Friday morning, the three men were remanded to judicial custody and sent to jail. Further legal proceedings in the cases against them are expected to continue through the relevant courts.
