Tragic death of two children after entering a pond for bathing in Rupganj

Two young schoolgirls tragically lost their lives after drowning in a pond in the Rupganj Upazila of Narayanganj. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon in the Sonabo area, situated within the Bhulta Union. The deceased have been identified as Faria and Tumpa, both of whom were residents of the locality and students at a local primary-level educational institution.

Details of the Incident

According to local witnesses and administrative reports, the two children went to a pond adjacent to their residences to bathe at approximately noon. During the course of their activities, Faria accidentally slipped into deeper water and began to submerge. In a desperate attempt to rescue her companion, Tumpa also entered the deeper section of the pond, resulting in both children being pulled underwater.

Upon realising the children were missing, family members and local residents initiated a search operation. After a period of time, both girls were recovered from the water in an unconscious state. They were immediately transported to a nearby private hospital; however, the attending physicians pronounced them dead on arrival.

Profiles of the Deceased

The families of both victims are originally from the Dirai Upazila in the Sunamganj District, having relocated to Rupganj for employment. Their parents are employed as garment factory workers, a common demographic in the industrial belt of Narayanganj.

Official Response and Investigation

The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rupganj Police Station, Salahuddin Ahmed, confirmed the fatalities and stated that a police team was dispatched to the scene immediately upon receiving the report. “We have sent officers to the site to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths,” the OC noted. The authorities are currently conducting a formal inquiry to ensure there was no foul play, though preliminary findings suggest the event was an accidental drowning.
