WASHINGTON, 28 March 2025 (BSS/AFP) – President Donald Trump has withdrawn the nomination of right-wing firebrand Elise Stefanik as the United States ambassador to the United Nations, citing concerns over the fragile Republican majority in Congress.
The decision underscores growing unease among Republicans, who hold a narrow lead in the House of Representatives and are wary of jeopardising their legislative control ahead of crucial elections.
Stefanik, a staunch Trump ally and a vocal supporter of Israel, was poised to become a prominent figure on the international stage. However, Trump announced on his social media platform, Truth Social, that maintaining Republican seats in Congress was of paramount importance.
“With a very tight majority, I don’t want to take a chance on anyone else running for Elise’s seat in the House of Representatives,” Trump stated. “It is essential that we maintain EVERY Republican seat in Congress.”
The decision means Stefanik will remain in Congress, with Trump indicating that she will play a key role in the House leadership team, though he did not specify her exact position.
Republicans currently hold a fragile 218-213 advantage in the House, leaving little room for unexpected shifts in power. The withdrawal of Stefanik’s nomination comes at a time when the party is facing intense electoral pressure.
Two special elections in Florida on 1 April are expected to fill the seats vacated by Mike Waltz, now serving as Trump’s national security adviser, and Matt Gaetz, who withdrew from consideration for the position of attorney general following allegations of sexual misconduct.
Although both seats were comfortably won by Republicans in the 2024 election, recent polling suggests a tightening race in at least one district, raising concerns among party leaders. Trump’s participation in an online campaign event for a Republican candidate is viewed as a sign of the administration’s anxiety over potential losses.
Further worries were fuelled earlier this week when a special election in Pennsylvania saw a traditionally Republican state senate district swing to the Democrats—an outcome that analysts interpret as a warning sign for the GOP ahead of the 2026 midterms.
Stefanik, once considered a moderate before aligning herself closely with Trump’s political movement, has been an outspoken critic of the United Nations and an advocate for Israel.
During her Senate confirmation hearing in January, she condemned what she described as the “anti-Semitic rot” within the UN and pushed for major reforms to ensure that US funding does not support organisations engaging in activities contrary to American interests. She specifically highlighted concerns over the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), the body responsible for Palestinian refugees, which the Biden administration had defunded due to allegations of links to terrorism.
Furthermore, she echoed sentiments of far-right Israeli ministers by asserting that Israel has a “biblical right to the entire West Bank.” However, she avoided giving a direct stance on Palestinian self-determination, a contentious issue in US foreign policy.
Stefanik’s nomination marked only the second high-profile Trump administration appointment to falter, following Gaetz’s withdrawal from the attorney general race. With her remaining in Congress, Trump will now have to seek an alternative candidate for the UN ambassadorial role—one who aligns with his administration’s priorities while ensuring no disruption to the Republican legislative agenda.
As the 2026 elections loom, Republican leadership is focused on maintaining its hold on both chambers of Congress. The Florida special elections and other upcoming races will serve as key indicators of the party’s strength in an increasingly polarised political landscape.
