The opening day of the 2026 Indian Premier League has brought an early setback for Chennai Super Kings, with confirmation that their long-serving talisman Mahendra Singh Dhoni will miss the initial phase of the competition. The development revives familiar discussions around the veteran’s future, which have surfaced almost every season, only to be dispelled by his continued appearances on the field.
In an official update, Chennai stated that Dhoni is currently undergoing rehabilitation for a muscle strain and will be unavailable for approximately two weeks. Consequently, he is expected to miss the side’s opening fixtures, including their first scheduled match against Rajasthan Royals. The franchise conveyed its support for the experienced wicketkeeper-batter, expressing optimism about his recovery.
Despite advancing age and a reduced batting role, Dhoni remains a crucial figure in Chennai’s structure. During the previous season, he featured in all 14 league matches, primarily batting in the lower order where opportunities were limited. Even so, his finishing ability remained evident as he accumulated 196 runs in 13 innings at a brisk scoring rate.
| Aspect | Figures |
|---|---|
| Matches | 14 |
| Innings | 13 |
| Runs Scored | 196 |
| Strike Rate | 135.17 |
Chennai’s overall performance in 2025, however, fell short of expectations. Led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, the side secured only four victories in the league stage and ended the campaign at the bottom of the table, missing out on the play-offs. The result marked one of the most challenging seasons in the franchise’s history.
Injury concerns have not been limited to Dhoni alone. Australian fast bowler Nathan Ellis has been ruled out of the entire season, prompting Chennai to sign Spencer Johnson as his replacement. Nonetheless, the squad retains considerable depth in pace bowling, with options including Matt Henry, Jamie Overton, and Khaleel Ahmed, alongside a number of emerging domestic players.
Off the field, Chennai made significant moves ahead of the auction period. The acquisition of Sanju Samson from Rajasthan drew considerable attention, with Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran moving in the opposite direction. The franchise also invested in young prospects such as Kartik Sharma and Urvil Patel, the latter having impressed with an exceptional scoring rate in limited appearances last season.
As the nineteenth edition of the tournament unfolds, Chennai must contend with the absence of one of their most influential figures during the crucial early fixtures. While Dhoni’s unavailability represents a notable challenge, it may also encourage other members of the squad to assume greater responsibility as the team aims to recover from last year’s disappointing campaign.
