Twaki Murder: Ajmeri Osman’s Driver Remanded

A Narayanganj court has granted a two-day remand for Jamshed Shekh, the personal driver of Ajmeri Osman, in connection with the murder of the meritorious student Tanvir Mohammad Twaki. Senior Judicial Magistrate Yasir Arafat issued the order on Sunday, 14 June, specifying that the remand must be executed within the next three days.

According to Advocate Awlad Hossain, a prominent lawyer representing the plaintiff, the investigating officer of the case, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Dipak Chandra Majumder of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), had previously applied for a remand on 4 June. Although the court granted that initial request, the investigating officer was unable to interrogate the suspect due to state duties. Consequently, a fresh application was submitted on Sunday, leading to a hearing at 11:00 am, after which the two-day remand was approved.

Case Proceedings and Timeline

Date Event / Investigation Milestone
6 March 2013 Tanvir Mohammad Twaki goes missing after leaving his residence on Shaista Khan Road.
8 March 2013 Twaki’s body is recovered from the Kumundini Canal of the Shitalakshya River.
12 November 2013 Associate Sultan Shawkat Bhromor delivers a confessional statement under Section 164.
5 March 2014 RAB announces during a press conference that 11 individuals committed the murder.
1 June The case reaches its 104th scheduled court date without a charge sheet.
14 June Court grants a two-day remand for driver Jamshed Shekh.

The case was filed by Twaki’s father, Rafiur Rabbi. During the court proceedings, Advocates Awlad Hossain, Pradip Ghosh Babu, and Ziaul Islam Kajal represented the plaintiff.

The legal process has seen prolonged delays. On 1 June, the case marked its 104th scheduled court date; however, RAB has yet to submit the formal charge sheet. Out of the 11 accused individuals in this murder case, eight appeared in court on that day, two remain fugitives, and one was granted a time petition through a legal representative.

The background of the incident traces back to 6 March 2013, when Tanvir Mohammad Twaki disappeared after leaving his home on Shaista Khan Road in the city to visit the Sudhijon Pathagar. His body was recovered by police two days later, on 8 March, from the Kumundini Canal of the Shitalakshya River.

Later that year, on 12 November, Sultan Shawkat Bhromor, an associate of Ajmeri Osman, gave a confessional statement under Section 164 in court, stating that Twaki had been abducted and killed under the leadership of Ajmeri Osman. On 5 March 2014, RAB held a press conference declaring that 11 individuals had murdered Twaki inside a torture cell under the directives of the Osman family. Although the investigative agency stated that a charge sheet would be submitted shortly, the formal document has not yet been presented to the court.

In response to the unresolved investigation, the Narayanganj Sangskritik Jote continues to observe protest programmes, including candle-lighting vigils on the 8th of every month, demanding a trial and the arrest of the identified suspects.
