Two Arrested in Sonargaon Gang Rape Investigation

The police have apprehended two men, including a local political official from the Jubo Dal, following allegations of gang rape involving a housewife in the Sirab area of Jampur Union under Sonargaon Upazila, Narayanganj. The arrests were executed during a targeted law enforcement operation on Friday night, 12 June. The incident has caused significant public discussion and concern across the locality, prompting the registration of a formal criminal case at the Sonargaon Police Station.

Incident Dynamics and Criminal Allegations

According to the official case statement filed by the victim, she had been residing with her husband and children as a tenant in a rented house located within the Sirab locality of Jampur Union. On 10 June, at approximately 17:30 hours, whilst she was performing household duties in her kitchen, the primary suspect, Mohammad Shahid, accompanied by his associate, Shahin Mia, unlawfully entered the premises.

The case documents state that the suspects forcibly covered the victim’s mouth and intimidated her by threatening to harm her children. By exploiting these threats, the perpetrators compelled her to leave her home and escorted her to the ground floor of an adjacent four-storey building. Upon entering a vacant room inside the structure, the suspects bound her hands and mouth before subjecting her to gang rape. Following the assault, the suspects fled the scene, allowing the victim to return to her residence. On the evening of 10 June, when her husband returned home from his workplace, the victim informed him of the entire sequence of events.

Police Investigation and Recovery Measures

Following the disclosure, the victim formally approached the Sonargaon Police Station to file a written complaint regarding the sexual assault. Upon receiving the statement, law enforcement officials initiated an immediate preliminary investigation. This led to a police raid conducted on the night of Friday, 12 June, which resulted in the successful apprehension of both Mohammad Shahid and Shahin Mia.
