Two Bodies Recovered from Buriganga River, One Identified

Two bodies were recovered from the Buriganga River in separate incidents on Tuesday (4 August), with one of the deceased later identified by family members while the identity of the other remained unknown.

The bodies were recovered by two separate units of the river police during the afternoon. The first recovery took place near Washpur Jhauchar ferry terminal under Keraniganj Model Police Station, where members of the Basila Naval Police recovered the body of a man identified as Hridoy. Later in the day, around 4pm, the Pagla Naval Police recovered another body floating in the middle of the river near Kandapara ferry terminal in Konda Union under South Keraniganj Police Station.

According to Inspector Omar Ali, officer-in-charge of the Basila Naval Police outpost, the first deceased was identified as Hridoy, son of Sirajul Islam of Basila Uttar Mora area. Hridoy worked as a deliveryman for State Fast Courier Service.

Police said the body was initially recovered as unidentified. However, a SIM card found inside the deceased’s pocket helped investigators contact his family members. Assistant Sub-Inspector Azhar Ali of the Basila Naval Police said Hridoy’s younger brother Akash confirmed his identity after being contacted by police.

According to Akash, Hridoy had left home two days earlier for work but never returned. Family members searched for him but failed to locate him. After receiving a phone call from police and visiting the morgue, they identified the recovered body as Hridoy’s.

In the second incident, Pagla Naval Police recovered the body of an unidentified man after local residents spotted it floating in the river and informed authorities. Pagla Naval Police outpost officer-in-charge Mohammad Malek Biswas said officers reached the spot and retrieved the body.

During the initial examination, police found several serious injuries on the unidentified man’s body. The deceased’s right leg was severed, while the left leg and right arm were found broken. Multiple injury marks were also visible across the body. Police said the man was found without any clothing at the time of recovery.

Both bodies have been sent to the morgue of Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital for post-mortem examinations. Police said the exact causes of death would be determined after receiving the autopsy reports.

Separate cases have been filed with the relevant police stations by the Basila and Pagla Naval Police units. Investigators are continuing efforts to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths, including how the victims ended up in the river and whether there was any criminal involvement. Authorities are also working to establish the identity of the second victim and trace possible links with missing person reports.
